USB Icon Auto Change

Hi, just now when I start using my laptop, I notice that the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" the icon change from USB to Hub/Server icon.

Here are the examples: When USB Thumb drive plugin

Before Icon on the USB Drive (D:)

After refresh, the icon change into a Server/Hub icon.

May I ask is there something wrong with my computer? Because I run my antivirus on my drives, it's all clean, and no problem on my computer. Thank you.

hi Daniel. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Guardian Moderator here to help you.

This may pertain to Windows recently changed the default away from Safely Remove so that it is no longer necessary unless you want restore it:

To restore Safely remove:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/449526...

If not go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-performance/windows-10-performance-and-install-integrity/75529fd4-fac7-4653-893a-dd8cd4b4db00

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account.  Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

It's a bug.. every flash drive or external hdd you plug in will get that icon now. Also, if you go to "devices and printers" you'll see that it's now called "device" instead of showing its brand and model. Same thing on the bottom right icon used to unmount drives.

What i don't get is why the specialists that reply to these threads keep throwing the same pre-made answers instead of acknowledging that this is a bug.. after sooooo many people opening new threads explaining the same behaviour, they still treat everyone like they are having an isolated problem.

@miguel: I confirm your 'It*'s a bug ...' - see my answer at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/my-usb-drives-shows-either-as-a-generic-device-or/6e817b6d-8698-49d5-aa43-7e8a2042e47b - where I linked a blog post with further investigations. I've escalated the thread linked there and asked to forward it to the developers. Hope this helps

Go over this Windows 10 Performance and Install Integrity Checklist - Microsoft Community to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done

What has worked for others recently with similar problems is Step 4 to establish a Clean Boot.

If you want to report this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. They will not even see it here. This is a tech forums staffed mostly by volunteers trying to help others with your problems.

If you want to post back a Share link from your Feedback here others who see this thread can vote it up and add to it. If you are an Insider I can also vote it up with my MVP badge and track the issue for you.

Thanks. I also replied to that thread, showing where the problem resides.

Why do specialists feel the need to "help" as many people as they can, even if their answers aren't related to the problem at all? Is this a contest of "who answers more questions, wins"? Greg is still advising OP to to do things that won't help this problem at all.

It's a bug, OP doesn't need to do anything, he has to wait for microsoft to fix it.

There are some things that "fix it", like restoring windows to a previous date, but the problem comes back as soon as the user opens "Devices and Printers" and triggers another metadata request.

If you'll read my posts I referred the OP to Feedback Hub which is how the developers have asked MVP's and Moderators (of which I am most both of long-standing) to submit such bugs.  If MVP's want help escalate then we are additionally asked to expedite the Feedback with your MVP badge.  This actually does something other than taking potshots in the forums at those who work hardest here to help others.

Disparaging others is a violation of the CofC.  Any further posts not replying to the OP on topic with additional help will be removed.
