Surface Pen "Staircasing" pressure sensitivity issue on Surface Pro X

Could you tell me if a firmware or driver update is on the way to fix this problem?  My brush strokes look truly awful in Clip Studio Paint.  In the Surface app, when I do a pen pressure test, there is obvious staircasing on the pressure curve.  As a tablet it's no good for drawing anymore until this is fixed...

Hi FoxDuffy,

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community.  We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

To troubleshoot this issue, kindly follow the steps below.

Open Device Manager

Expand Firmware Human Interface Devices Bluetooth

Look for these drivers:

Surface Touch

HID-Compliant Touch

Surface Pen Digitizer

Surface Pen in Bluetooth

Surface Pen Settings

Right-click on each driver related to touch and pen and select "uninstall device". Leave the box unchecked if there's a pop-up before you can uninstall the drivers successfully. Then, if everything's uninstalled, restart your Surface to reinstall the drivers automatically.

Once done, please run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for Surface Pro X to fix common issues and update your Surface device.

If this helps, feel free to mark this post as an answer. Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread for further assistance.

Kind Regards,

Crest_Z

I could not find most of those items, in those exact words, in their sub-categories.  Here are snippets of each category:

Initially, I found "Surface Slim Pen" under Bluetooth and I uninstalled it's driver.  Then I uninstalled the "Surface Touch Firmware" driver under Firmware because it sounded close enough to the "Surface Touch" you mentioned.  Is "Surface Digitizer Component Firmware Update" the new name for "Surface Digitizer"?  I also did not uninstall "HID Compliant Touch Screen" yet but I think that may have been what you meant by "HID Compliant Touch."

Anyways, "Surface Slim Pen" has returned merely as "Bluetooth Pen" in that above list, and the problem has not been fixed yet by uninstalling those two things I mentioned above and running the Surface Diagnostic Tool.

Is there any chance you could confirm exactly what you want me to remove all at once from the above lists?

Hi FoxDuffy,

Sorry for the delayed response.

Those drivers mentioned above are the drivers I actually see on Surface Pros with Intel Processor. It may be different on a Surface Pro X and I thank you for taking a picture of it.

Below are the drivers you'll have to uninstall/reinstall:

Bluetooth Pen

Surface Touch Firmware

HID Compliant Pen

HID Compliant Touch Screen

Surface Digitizer Component Firmware Update

Surface Digitizer HidSpi

Surface Ink

Surface Integration Firmware Update

Surface Touch Pen Processor

Once you right-click on each driver, please leave the box unticked right after choosing "uninstall device" so that you can reinstall those drivers automatically after restarting the device.

If in case it is still staircasing after uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, what I can highly suggest is to send a feedback to Microsoft using the Feedback Hub app to have this concern of yours raised to our software engineers.

Kind Regards,

Crest_Z

Thank you.  Unfortunately, it did not work.  I also recently installed the May feature update along with a hardware update and the problem still persists.  I filed a report with the Feedback Hub.  If you ever have any news that it's a known issue and being worked on, that would be great.
