outlook.com / Hotmail rules not working

Hello,

My rules on outlook.com seem to have stopped working some time last year.

To try fix the problem, I have:

  • deleted all my blocked and safe senders
  • deleted all rules and recreated just a few
  • My junk filtering is set to exclusive

Even when I did all the above, the *now empty* rules and filtering are being completely ignored.  The same old (broken) sorting rules are still being applied - even though they have all been deleted.

I have created a few sample rules (move all emails from ebay.co.uk with "order confirmed" in the subject to my inbox for example); they too are being ignored.  They are just staying in my Junk folder, even if I mark as safe.

Any ideas?

Hello,

May we know if there are any error messages when you attempt to set the rules in Outlook.com for us to isolate the issue.

We suggest that you access Outlook.com on a different web browser and see if the issue persists.

We look forward to an update from you.

Regards.

Hello,

it happens on multiple browsers (Chrome, Edge, IE11 and Safari (ios)).

There are no error messages - the settings part of outlook.com all gives the impression that it's working properly.

I think I may have found something which has an impact on the way the rules and junk filters operate.  I deleted all my contacts from Outlook, and the junk filter seems to have started working again.  I will slowly rebuild my rules and safe sender lists and see what happens.

The odd thing is that all my skype and old (read: historic) mobile contacts seemed to have recently merged into my Outlook.com contacts - creating a massive and unwieldy contacts list - some of which I still can't delete; and where I could delete then, I had to do it one at a time.

I will monitor and post back if the issue persists.

Hello,

I have spent the time watching and trying to retrain the junk filters etc.

Most of the functionality has returned since I deleted all my contacts.

However, rules still are not working and some email is still arriving in my junk mail, despite being flagged as safe.

I have tried IE11, Edge, Chrome, Safari and the iOS mail app to mark the email as safe.

Do you want screenshots of my rules?  Where are all the safe/unsafe lists stored?  Could I have missed one?

Hello,  Please see the two rules I created this way in the screen capture below.

Both Paypal and eBay messages still go to my junk folder.

I have also tried marking them as "not junk".  When I do this, the selected email moves into my inbox, but subsequent emails from the same sender still go to the junk folder.

Regards

I have also had the problem where some rules just stop working. I tried turning the rule off, saving, and then turning the rule back on and saving. So far this has worked; however the e-mails I have been trying to sort into folders are infrequent, so I can't tell if I have a long-lasting fix.

I have also been frustrated beyond belief by this same issue for almost 2 years now.  None of the suggestions to resolve have worked.

Although the both sweep and move rules are duly listed, they are never applied.

I have tried various browsers, there are no error messages, I have cleared and reset the rules multiple times and nothing resolves the problem that arose with the major update of Outlook which I wish I had refused to accept (if that was even possible). There is nothing other than the blocking of junk mail messages which qualifies as an improvement and in fact so many flaws and problems (most that were not there before) exist using Hotmail that it may not be worth the effort.

Why has it been so difficult for your experts to fix this issue within the past 2 years, when they broke it in the first place.

The calibre of your tech services is truly appalling.
