Wordpad

I'm real new to this so I'm not even sure I'm in the right spot, but here's my question.  I have Windows 8.1.  I found a Wordpad program that was free from Microsoft, so I downloaded it, since I couldn't afford Office.  I'm quite familiar with how word pad works, but this one doesn't seem to let me change the line spacing.  I guess I shouldn't say that...it does let me change it, but it's not making the space small enough.  The smallest space it gives me is 1.0, which leaves a

space big enough for another whole sentence line, like this.  It doesn't let me go any smaller.  It's very frustrating when I'm trying to type a letter to someone and it has a huge space like this.  Can someone please help me?  Thank you very much for your time.  And I apologize if this question is not in the right place.

You can set the line spacing to 1.00 and let Wordpad add 10pt space after paragraphs:

To start a new paragraph, press Enter once, not twice. The effect is like this:

If you clear the check box 'Add 10 pt space after paragraphs', there will be no extra space between paragraphs at all.

If you need more control over line spacing, consider using LibreOffice - it's free and it can edit and save Word documents.

Thank you for your reply.  I know that it only allows 1.00 spacing, but that still leaves a wide gap between sentences.  I will try LibreOffice, as you've suggested, to see how that works.  My question in regards to that suggestion is, do I need to delete my Wordpad program first, in order to have LibreOffice?  Just in case I'm not happy with LibreOffice.

Thank you again.

No, you don't have to remove WordPad. You can install LibreOffice and use both WordPad and LibreOffice without problems. If you don't like LibreOffice, you can uninstall it and keep on using WordPad.

Did you clear the check box for spacing after as Hans suggested? If so, you should have no extra space between paragraphs.
