Deleting the Word Data key in the Registry is a common fix for a lot of Word problems. The warning about the danger of editing the Registry is standard boilerplate, required to be included in any article that advises editing the Registry. There is no danger provided you do exactly what the article advises (you can export the key first if you are concerned). Word will automatically rebuild the key the next time you start it.
Before you do that, however, have you tried restarting Windows? Often that cures such transient problems.

XP printer drivers are fairly well debugged by now.
What make and model of printer? We may have more specific suggestions.

Here is an example of an Odd HP specific printer driver problem (not yours, just as an example)
have latest version of Office 2013 installed Windows 7-32bit. I can only print one time (one print job sent) from any Office app, if I try printing again (sending another print job to the printer from the same office app or
even non-office apps like Adobe PDF) the job gets stuck spooling, never progresses or prints. I can only print again if I reboot my computer, and then only once if I print from an Office 2013 app.
I have confirmed this is an Office 2013 bug because I have Office 2010 still installed so the very same document will print on the same printer fine and I can print after that just fine. So once I try to print from any Office 2013 app, the print spooler hangs.
After the problem occurred again even though I disabled Windows Defender, I have now confirmed it is the Printer driver (HP MFP printer). I determined this by setting up a “virtual” printer and was able to print to it consistently with no problem. Interestingly, that printer was one from the Windows 7 normal selections and probably older than the printer I am trying to print to. Unfortunately HP has not updated my printer’s driver since 2009 and I doubt they will at this point. I still don’t know what has changed in Office 2013 vs. 2010 that would cause a working printer driver to have this problem.
Here are some more HP specific printer problems and solutions you can look at and try
Oddly enough, this ended up being the cause of my problem. I had an older print driver installed on my Win7 machine and once I removed that driver, Word started working without any problems!
You can delete individual printer drivers by going into the registry. Note that simply going to Printers and Faxes and deleting a printer there does not delete the printer driver.

Another thing to consider is the mix of 32 and 64-bit. Many people have found that trying to mix 32 and 64-bit elements in the print stream simply does not work. So, if you are using 64-bit Office, as a final solution you may want to try uninstalling and re-installing 32-bit Office.
You may download the HP LaserJet 2420 PCL5 Drivers from the below given link. But, this driver is not compatible with Windows 8. It is only compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 W32, Windows Vista and Windows XP. So, I would suggest you to try installing this driver in the Windows Vista/XP compatibility mode and check if that resolves the issue.

Problem Solved. After searching the Web I came across a MSFT TechNet forum entry that discussed turning off Windows Defender to fix Windows 7 print spooling problems. I disabled the service and that solved my problem. I have no idea why Windows Defender would cause this only with Office 2013 apps and not Office 2010 or others.
A friend of mine was experiencing the same problem as you. A Windows 8 64bit machine with an HP M175nw color laser printer and Office 2013 64bit. Everything was working fine since the initial install of Office 2013. Then she started experiencing the spooling problem this past weekend. I verified that the printer drivers were the current version. There was a firmware update that I did to the printer. Still had the same problem. I then uninstalled the printer drivers and gave the printer a static IP address. I reinstalled the printer drivers and still had the same problem. My last thought was to uninstall Office 2013 and reinstall it. It now works. I don’t know what the problem was but I hope it doesn’t happen again.

Here’s a solution that is actually working since I made the change with my settings....
“After lots of testing I have found a setting that has fixed all my HP CP5520 and HP M4555 printers that were crashing when printing from Office 365’s 2013 pro plus.
It’s the driver setting in Device settings -> Installable options -> Printer Status notification, this needs to be disabled.”
We have Office 365 apps intalled in seven PC’s (3 with Win 8 64-bits and 4 with Win 7 32bits) and have the same problem with an HP1536dnf MFP.
Disabling the notification worked out in all them.

Disabling HP Print Notifications from settings button on little window that appears next to the system tray.
Office 2013 instead. I am having problems with Excel, Word and Outlook printing to two separate HP laserjet printers, models 1522nf and model 3015. I can print one file from these applications. The second file locks up the Excel, Word or Outlook program and the only solution that I have found is to close out of the program. If I restart my computer, I can then print one file before it locks up again. This only happens with my HP Laserjet Printers. I have a HP Officejet 8600 printer that does not have any problems printing in Office 2013 Excel, Word or Outlook. Both of my Laserjet printers will print anything on Internet Explorer or non Office based programs without any issues. I have downloaded the latest drivers for these printers and looked for any latest updates to Office 2013 and made sure that I had the most recent.
I installed the printer driver Vista version for my HP Laserjet 1522 and that fixed the problem with the Spooling / Cache issue with Office 2013. Best Buy and HP via phone could not come up with this answer. Thanks again!

This link describes how the user solved an Excel crashing problem by switching to an alternate printer driver.
I find it surprising, but it shows how closely Excel (and Word) are tied to the printer and printer driver.
I had faced this issue as the printer driver caused the problem.
In my case,
Fault Module Name: hpz3r5k2.dll caused by the printer Officejet K8600 driver.
It is not compatible with excell 2010 during print preview.
After work out almost 2 weeks, I figured out the solution, found that printer driver Officejet K7100 solved the problem.
At the printer Officejet K8600, I change the driver to Officejet K7100 series.
Voila, no more crash and restarting when using print preview and printing working great.

How do I delete the Word Data Key?
Here's my issues. in Microsoft word and excel everything is fine until I go to print when I do so it's like the program freezes and I have to control alt delete to get out. Why is it doing this.

I entered "me too" on this question, but my problem isn't identical. Here's what I've got:
1. Windows 10 pro 64-bit + Office 2010 Pro Plus.
2. Home network with 3 PC's and 2 Brother printers.
3. Problem is only from 1st PC, trying to print from Office 2010 to printer HL-5370DW. When printing a Word document or Excel workbook, everything on my screen looks as if printing has taken place (no documents remain in queue, no error messages); however, the HL-5370 receives no data.
4. By contrast, HL-5370 prints pdf files normally from Foxit Reader; also, Office 2010 on a 2nd PC can print docs and spreadsheets normally to the HL-5370.
5. And 1st PC can print normally from Office 2010 to the other Brother printer, MFC-8810DW
The following interventions have not helped:
1. rebooting the PC with the problem several times
2. removing and reinstalling the latest printer driver from Brother's website (it's from 2013!)
3. rebooting the printer
4. rebooting the router
Note that the HL-5370DW has a static IP address on the home network and connects to the router via Ethernet cable.

I had to copy all the text into a new Word Doc before it would print.
That suggests document corruption as (part of) the problem.
