Cannot open JPEG/JPG pitcures and .MOV video files

Hi,

I am having a problem with Window 8 Pro 64-Bit. I cannot view certain JPEG or JPG format pictures nor can I view certain .MOV video files.

Below is the list of programs I tried to attempt to open with:

FOR PICTURES:

- Internet Explorer

- Windows Photo Gallery

- Windows Photo Viewer

- Windows Photo App (Metro)

- Windows Movie Maker

- Picasa

- Paint

FOR VIDEOS:

- VLC Player

- Windows Movie Maker

- Windows Movie App (Metro)

- Windows Media Player

- iTunes

When trying to view photos, some JPEG and other formats will be viewable but other photos would not be viewable, I either would get a error message saying the format is not supported for the program (which it shouldn't since other photos are in the same format) or get a blank screen (especially through the Metro Photo app)

When I attempted to use the Metro Movie app, this is the error I got for all the .MOV format videos:

0xc1010090 (0xc00d36c4)

ALL the listed programs above could not open selected JPEG or JPG pictures and .MOV videos.

OTHER ATTEMPTED OPTIONS:

I tried running sfc /scannow to see if it fixed and nothing. I tried to give the folder user account full access and still nothing. I even went to "Change User Account Control settings" and set it to "Never notify" and nothing happened.

BTW, these files are viewable through other computers not running Windows 8.

I have run into other posts about this problem where certain files will not be viewable for some reason. Is this a serious bug in 8?

I hope someone has a solution to this that I have not listed yet.

2. Are you aware of making any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Method 1:

A default program is the program that Windows uses automatically when you open a particular type of file, such as a song, movie, photo, or webpage. For example, you might have more than one photo-editing program installed on your PC.

Method 2:

In order to play the MOV Files on the windows media player you may have to install third party codec’s, so that it will support the file format to play in Windows Media Player.

Note:

Install only codecs, filters or plug-ins from trusted, authorized sources such as the official website of the codec manufacturer. Be careful when you install codecs that you find on the Internet, particularly the free codec packs that claim to include codecs from many companies, because these codec packs might damage your PC. If you've installed any codec packs and are having problems with the Player, we recommend that you remove them.

Method 3:

Place the computer in clean boot and check for the issue.

Note: Once you are done with clean boot, please follow step 3 in the article to put your computer back to normal startup.

Hello again,

None of the suggestions above have worked. The Default program settings have all been set to allow full access to use.

The codecs that I have attempted to install and use did not solve the problem.

The clean boot did not allow me to open any of the affected files (I even turned off all the visible services that were non-Microsoft and Windows 8 would still not let me open the files).

I do not know what else to do. All I did was install everything on a new computer setup. I only had a problem with doing multiple restores because one of the drivers for the motherboard was causing it to prevent a full boot up. I have since restored it back to before any drivers or programs were installed and reinstalled the drivers that were working properly.

Hello again,

I have found the problem which was cause by my doing a month ago and was the result of a formatting error. The affected files are unreadable due to corruption.
