What sort of square mark? A square bullet? A square bracket? Can you post a screen shot?

Am pasting the screen shot in but it is not attaching to the post, any other useful way of doing this would be most appreciated!

Use the Insert image button in the editor window. It's the next to last button on the toolbar.

I can't tell from your screenshot but I am guessing you are seeing bookmarks. These are non-printing indicators to show you where bookmarks are situated.

If this is your issue then you can hide them from view by changing your option in File > Options > Advanced > Show document content > Show bookmarks

We need a screen shot of just a small area showing the problem, not the whole page. But, like Guessed, I've been thinking of bookmark brackets from the outset.

If you are talking about the marks that look like:

They are table end of cell markers.  The will disappear if you click on the Show\Hide (¶} button in the Paragraph section of the Home tab of the ribbon.

See the article "What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?” at:

Hi all,

No they are not hypen-marks, which go when you switch and turn off the Hy-pen Key, it is just a small square mark after the text, and they print as well, they appear occasionally after the style ref fields, if you

I have got the Hypen Key on  - in the second field down which is Date: and then you have the number 1 a small white outlined black small square appears, then next text marks are from the table border as I have the Hypen Key on.... these marks also print.
