Class not Registered Windows Media Player

Currently on build 16215 and since this update I get "Class not Registered"  when I try to play mkv files using Windows Media Player

Rolling back solved the issue but with the update again I still have the problem.

Surface Pro 3 being used

Thank you

Hi,

The error class not registered may occur if there are any Windows files that are not properly registered or missing in Windows. To better assist you and isolate what's causing this error, kindly answer the questions below:

  • Does this error come up when trying to play a different file format?
  • What version of Windows Media Player are you using?
  • What other troubleshooting steps have you tried aside from rolling back to your previous Windows version?

You may also check this discussion which is similar to what you are currently experiencing. Please refer to Job Sam Varkey's post on this thread for troubleshooting.

We're looking forward for your response.

Error occurs with all video file formats, works fine with music

Version 12.0.16215.1000

I have done suggested 'fixes' of:

      Dllregisteration

and

Turn Windows features on or off

Currently using VLC for the time being but the fact that a windows upgrade disables Windows Media Player is disconcerting

ok, after further testing I have discovered that

Navigating to the file and then Clicking on the file itself, launching WMP,  gives the error.

However, if I launch Windows Media Player and then navigate to the file the videos play without issue.

We appreciate your response. We would like to know if you installed any third-party codecs on your system prior to this issue. If yes, we suggest you uninstall them and try to run the audio files again. However, if there were no codecs installed, we suggest you submit a feedback.

To use the Feedback Hub app to report a problem, follow these steps:

  1. Search for “Feedback Hub” in Cortana search, then launch the app.
  2. Navigate to Feedback in the left menu, then press + Add new feedback.
  3. Select the Problem button, share any details you think are relevant, and choose an appropriate category and subcategory.
  4. Important: If possible, reproduce the problem(s) after clicking Begin monitoring (or Start capture) near the end of the form; Stop monitoring when you’re done.
  5. Once you’ve completed the form and monitoring, click Submit.
  6. Click Continue using Feedback Hub.
  7. Click My feedback at the top, then find the item you submitted. (It may take a while to appear.)
  8. Open the item you submitted, then click Share.
  9. If you also posted in a forum thread, you can click Copy link, and paste the link in your response. (It will look like https://aka.ms/<unique link>)

Regards.
