No sound after installing Windows 10 Anniversary Update

I recently installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and I currently have no sound.  I have reinstalled the drivers from RealTek and still no luck.  I am wondering if a new driver is in the works.  Anyone have any suggestions!!! Thanks

I had tried everything that was suggested along with installing the generic Windows drive and no success at getting audio back.

Hi Darren,

Thank you for the update. Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check.

  1. Right click on the start menu and select control panel.
  2. In the category select small icons.
  3. Select Troubleshooting.
  4. Select View all on the top left corner.
  5. Click on Hardware and Devices.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

It found an error and fixed that drivers were not allowed to be installed.  I am not sure what to do after it was fixed.  Do I try and reinstall the drivers?  I noticed in events that it was showing an error device not migrated.  Hope this information helps.

Hi Darren,

In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device, and in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next timeWindows Updates are installed.

You cannot stop Automatic Windows updates on Windows 10 but you canblock certain updates for any particular driver. I suggest you to refer the steps provided by Rohit Chettri on the below thread link to block update of a driver software.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_update/how-to-block-automatic-reinstall-of-a-driver-or/bff07224-4ce2-4b42-ab29-68c3a305d730

Hope this information was helpful. Thank you.

Fix sound problems

Do let us know if you are able to get sound. Thank you.

After upgrading to Windows 10 anniversary edition, I have no sound on 3 Dell Inspiron 620 i5 6 ram (same configuration) desktop computers.   One of the computers is "fixed".   These instructions do not help at all.  When I go to update driver, it states I have current driver.

After trying for hours & fiddling with all the sound settings, I somehow restored sound to 1 of the 3 computers by accident.  It seems the problem is that windows changed the sound from the speakers to headphones.  meaning the speakers were disabled in the upgrade.  Can you help?

This did not work either.  See my post of 2 minutes ago.

This is the simple solution that worked for me. The update disabled my playback devices and defaulted to my headphone jack as well. This was fixed by right clicking on the audio output icon, clicking on playback devices, right clicking the speakers I want, and setting them to default.
