Media Center Extender no longer playing 5.1

Before the recent upgrade (Windows 8) I was able to use the Windows Media Center Extender with my Xbox 360 to play movies in 5.1. I am using WMV 10 with WMA Pro for my 5.1 surround encoding. I have tested the files using the build in Xbox video player and they play in 5.1. I have also tried other files including AVI & MKV and they also don't play 5.1. It seems that in Media Center Extender it trys to play them as PCM. I dont' see a sound option inside of the extender like there is on the PC side to set the audio as 5.1. I'm connected to my receiver and my TV via HDMI. I have found a forum that suggested installing AC3Filter for codecs but this didn't solve it.

Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community!

From your issue description I understand that you are not able to play any files using Xbox 360 5.1 surround encoding.

This is correct I am able to play files but like the post here; http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-pictures/win8-media-center-streaming-to-xbox-quality-issues/65d7253d-2811-4859-b939-8c186a0bd623 we are not getting 5.1 audio from video files that are 5.1. I can play these video files via the Xbox Media Player or by having Windows 8 send to Xbox option. Both of these play 5.1 audio. The MCE does not it downgrades to PCM audio.

I did try a few other tests. I did try a few other tests. I tried changing options inside of WMC on the PC but no change. As I mentioned I'm also using My Movies with Windows Media Center. It has the option to transcode an ISO file. I played an ISO inside of the Xbox MCE and it played in 5.1. I'm not sure what is the issue.

I am having the same problem.  Not only is there no 5.1 audio but the video is compressed as well.  All worked great with windows 7.  My xbox is hardwired to my PC not using wifi.

Hi Everyone

Engineering is aware of the issue and is actively working on a resolution.  In the meantime, please use Play To or another app as workaround (when applicable) until a fix is available."

Play To does not always work, and is completely unavailable for other containers like MKV even with correct codecs installed.
