I was looking to turn off Indexing in Windows 10.  Where did it go, well it started with windows 7, I did not ask for 7.  Then it leads me all over the place and never did get to Turning Indexing of Windows 10 off.  Why do I want to shut it off? I am editing Karaoke music.  There are always two files with the same name, however different extensions When it indexes, the first file renames indexes and is lost.  In other versions of Windows I did not have this problem.  So my point is do not assume what I mean! If I ask for Windows 10, 1) don't show me data about 7. 2) Lead me to solution in stead of a dozen other web sites.

  1. Open file manager
  2. Right click on one of your system drives (the c:\ drive, for example).
  3. A menu will appear, Click the Properties menu item
  4. Properties dialog will appear, the last item (a checkbox) which includes the text "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" will be checked. Note: Mine is unchecked because I just unchecked it.
  5. Uncheck that item and click the [Apply] button (see image below).
  6. Warning : When you click the [Apply] button the system will go through every file on your system and it takes a long while depending upon how many files you have.

It looks like the following when it's running:

Also, that progress bar is like a spinner and you can't really tell how much longer it's going to take.
