An unexpected I/O error has occured.File:\Boot\BCD

My Toshiba Satellite with Vista Premium 64 stopped working.I get the black screen and only F2,or F12 work(not F8)If I don't press anything, I get a message
"Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your pc.This error can be caused by unplagging a removable storage device...,or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM.Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your pc.

File:\Boot\Bcd
Status:0xc00000e9
Info an unexpected I/O error has occured."

Nothing is connected to my laptop.
Can't go to any safe modes.Tapping F8 not doing anything.Tried recovering my system with Vista recovery disc' with no luck. When I get to System Recovery Options screen,no systems come up.I tried trun System repair, get the same massage at the end.Tried to do restore points, get error message about not having any restore points. Is there a way I can restore it to factory settings with pressing some magic buttons?Or do anything else to get it to work.I must've spent at least 20 hrs trying to fix it,with no results. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi  Agnes15,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

It seems that the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) is corrupted.

Microsoft has completely reengineered the boot environment for Microsoft Windows Vista to address the increasing complexity and diversity of modern hardware and firmware. One aspect of this reengineering is a new firmware-independent data store that contains configuration data that influences the boot process. This paper provides an overview of this configuration data - called boot configuration data (BCD) - and describes how to use the related tools to manage boot options.

Step 1

Perform chkdsk which will repair the bad sectors of the hard drive.

To do this, follow these steps:

1.       Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

2.       Type chkdsk/ f, chkdsk/r, chkdsk/i, chkdsk/c in the commands listed below  i.e. (/f, /r , /i, /c).

Step 2

Try to load BIOS to default and check if you have similar issue.

Step 3

I would suggest you to rebuilt BCD. To do this, follow these steps:

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
  2. Press a key when you are prompted.
  3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
  4. Click Repair your computer.
  5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
  6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
  7. Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

8.       Type bootrec /RebuildBcd , and press Enter.

For more information refer the link given below:

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.

I have exactly the same problem.  I'm not sure how I can follow the steps Debleena 5 outlines, when I am unable to see anything but a blank screen.  Even the recovery disk isn't working.  Any suggestions?

I have the same issue but the OS doesn't even appear. My option is to Load Drivers for my hard disks but where do I find them? There are 3 disks with Windows Recovery... I'd think they'd be on the first... I am directed to the System32 file which contains many, many files.

Thanks, Jared

Ok I am having the same problem BUt with Windows 7.  It is a brand new laptop.  I haven't even gotten to use it yet :/.  I start it up, answer the windows questions and then I get the mandatory hard drive partition screen.  I set the first partition to around 60 GB which is more then the recommended (tooling around forums that was what seemed a very safe number).  The computer goes to restart and then hits this error.  After hitting enter when this error appears to clear it, it once again shows the partition screen.  This cycle has happened 6 times in a row.  I have never used Windows 7 before and I am very confused.  Any help is appreciated.

Our three week old Dell T160 server running windows server 2008 is experiencing the same issue.

The SAS 6i6 Controller failed, thus corrupting the mirrored pair.

Recommendation: replace  your hard drive(s).

Drive 0, Media Error and Drive 1, in a failed status.

Hello all, I am having the same problem with Windows 7 x64. I boot from the installtion DVD but the system hangs at the Windows 7 splash screen. I wait for some time, then the machine will either reboot or my monitor goes to sleep. I reboot, and the same thing continues to happen.  The and only time that I was able to access the recovery environment my installed OS was not detected. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

I was having a similar problem with my hp laptop running vista 64. I tried almost all of the mentioned fixes to no avail. I opened the disk drive to take out the recover disk I was unsuccessfully  trying to use, and it started up without a problem. I had been trying to start up windows with a disk in every time and it failed. Could be that there is some error reading from the disk drive during start up. I didn't always have this problem, probably due to an update or something. Disk drive works after windows is done loading, but fails if I try to start system with disk in. Not sure as to what technical aspects could be at work. If anyone could explain this to me I would appreciate a response.

Hello

Both my wife’s and my laptop came with windows 7 preloaded on them so I don’t have CDs to boot from.  My question is it possible to copy the Boot\Bcd file from her computer and install it onto a flash drive to boot my computer.

Thanks

Brian
