windows 10 (1903) update KB4507453 + KB4506991 error - does not boot

I had to go back to the last restore point of 2019-07-11 to make the system run again.

Error 0x80242016 is shown for KB4507453. There is plenty of disk space.

By the way, the faulty installation affected the efi-bios, so that no boot device was available. I had to restart the computer twice, then the boot devices were found again. (I have a dual boot installation with Linux, so GRUB has to start as primary boot device. It is annoying that I must always change to the linux-partition as primary boot partition manually after the faulty windows updates. After a "normal" windows update, everything is fine, no manual action necessary.)

I encountered a similar problem only once, I guess it was 2018.

Someone else with the same problem?

Please inform me, when corrected updates are available.

Hi Detmar. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 10 year Windows MVP here to help you.

You will get better performance and less problems with your Dual Boot is you will use the Windows bootloader instead of GRUB. To do this, ensure that you use the advanced options and load grub to the Actual Linux Partition, rather than the active partition, and use EasyBCD to add the grub loader to the Windows Bootloader.

Tutorial: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Ubuntu
EasyBCD here, no email or name needed: http://neosmart.net/Download/Register/1

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Restoring to the latest restore point works.

Several more people have the same issue, see

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-update-kb4507453-fails-to-install/59198d6a-ac1e-456b-8fb0-dfb5c513cdc5

My system is not dual boot and still KB4507453 gets to boot failure, so this is not relevant.

I've been plagued by this issue after installing the 1903 update in May. Any cumulative update seemed to install okay, but upon restarting, I'd see the Windows logo followed by a black screen with an infinitely spinning circle. The most recent update to cause this issue was KB4507453.

Today, I fixed it by doing these steps:

1. Ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

No errors were reported with this and it restored properly

2. Ran sfc /scannow

This reported multiple windows files as being corrupt but reported that it was able to repair them successfully:

3. Downloaded the KB4507453 directly from the update catalog: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4507453

4. After restarting, I was back to normal and windows update doesn't report any other updates pending or needed at this time.

Prior to all these steps, I tried a number of things like running the update troubleshooting tool and clean reboots, but everytime this update tried to install, it failed.

Today, I fixed it by doing these steps:

These steps did not solve the boot problem, but using the Windows 10 installation media tool to upgrade in-place while keeping apps & settings solved the issue!

Greg,

Maybe you can help me!  Twice I have installed the 1903 update which did fine but when it installed the Net.Framework 3.5, 4.8 for Windows 1903 (KB4506991) start up files were corrupted and I had to re-install Windows - only option I had on my wife's Dell XPS13.  I know I can delay all updates but would love to just have the option of NOT installing the Net.Framework update as that seems to be a big problem.  Is there any way I can do this?  It is wierd because I have the same model XPS13 but had not problem.

Brian,

For me, I delayed the updates at least twice for a week and ran the ASUS UX303L on Linux for at least two weeks. Today, I returned to Windows and the updates worked fine as they should.  Instead of KB4506991, initially suspicious, the KB4507453 was the troublemaker, obviously. It was never really installed. KB124508 seems to be the alternative.

To select updates, try WUShowHide.
