Hi Antony,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I understand how frustrating it is when things doesn’t work at times. I will be glad to assist you with this issue.

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on. Before you follow the methods given in the suggested article, try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again to resolve the issue.

Follow the steps given in the article on "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error message and check if it helps:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947215

Note: Steps applies to Windows 10 as well.

Disclaimer:  Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The answer doesn't actually work in Windows 10 like you said it would. The problem is that there isn't even a profile to delete because it's happening the first time you try to log into the new account. Please find a Windows 10 answer to this problem and not a Windows 8 answer to a different problem.

I am having the same issue.  Have set-up an administrator account with my wife's live.com account.  My two kids each have outlook.com accounts (as do I), but no on can logon to this laptop except my wife's account.  I have tried the regedit fix you see in all the other support sections, however there is no .bak file use to fix the issue.  I have have even tried re-installing windows 10, but that does not help either.  Help please.

I'm having the same problem!  This happened on the FIRST login!  The windows vista solution doesn't work.

I had the same problem but was able to get a fix from one of the forums:

Just copy the Default folder (in C:\Users) from another windows 10 computer and, after you rename your problematic Default folder to something like DefaultOLD (just to keep it for safety reasons), paste it in your Users folder. To make sure that you won't have problems with permissions of the "implant" folder, just transfer it via a FAT/FAT32 formatted usb stick (those filesystems don't have permissions). Note: The 'Default folder (in C:\Users)' is hidden, so you have to click on the 'view' and check 'hidden files'.

I'm having the same problem!  This happened on the FIRST login!  The windows vista solution doesn't work.

Fixed it by copying the  'C:\Users\Default' folder from another PC with windows 10 installed (VIA a flash drive).  I renamed the one on my problem machine 'Default.old', then I copied the new one in.

I Note: The 'Default folder (in C:\Users)' is hidden, so you have to click on the 'view' and check 'hidden files'.

I then created a new user. Signed off my ID and signed back on with the new user and -- WOW - it worked.

If you don't have another Windows 10 PC - just checked the forums, I saw where someone from the UK dropboxed a Default folder for others to use for this fix. They actually had the link to the dropbox in there comments.

Shack!  This was super easy and worked to fix the problem.  Thanks Ron... I think Microsoft owes you some royalties for fixing the problem for them.
