KB4566782 Update Loop

My laptop is running Windows 10 2004 OS build 19041.388 and windows update decides to automatically install cumulative update KB4566782 (build 19041.450). The installation will fail (0x800f081f) during updating Windows and Windows update automatically retry to install it until my laptop's battery dies.

How get out of this update loop?

update: We need a true solution, and please do not mark reinstalling windows 10 as an answer, dear moderators.

KB4566782 2020-08 Cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 2004 x64 failed to install generating Error Code: 0x800f081f. The Diagnostic Viewer reported  an APPCRASH in Application: wuauclt.exe V. 10.0.19041.329 and the Fault Module was: ntdll.dll V. 10.0.19041.207. I performed an sfc / scannow and it did not find any corruption. I restarted the CPU and retried to reapply the patch with the same results.

Is it possible for Microsoft to address this issue. Thank you.

Hello #Parth,

I am Antonio, a Microsoft Community independent advisor, a Windows 10 and Microsoft office user like you. I hope I can help you on your concern.

To be able to assist you properly, I would like to ask few questions from you, please see below:

1. You mentioned you got a cumulative update on 08-20, do you know what's the KB# for that update?
2. Do you have any anti-virus installed?

Please try this method to fix the issue:

1. Try reset Windows update components:
2. Right click on the start button and select Powershell (admin) or Command Prompt (admin)
3. Write the next hit enter after each line.
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
4. Restart and try again.

[Source of information]:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

If the above method does not help, please download manually the cumulative update on the link below. You should know the KB # for that update and search it on the link. After downloading the cumulative update file, please try to manually install it.

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/home.aspx

You're response is highly appreciated. Please let me know if the issue is fixed, if not, we will find another way.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Keep safe always.

Sincerely,
Antonio

I'm getting the following after the latest Windows 10 update not installing -

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800f081f)"

Please advise as what I should do. Thanks.

Hello Rubert,

Good day!

I'm Jericho, a fellow customer and an individual advisor. I am happy to assist you!

If you are experiencing issues in updating Windows, you may refer to the steps below:

First is you must disable any third-party antivirus that is currently running on your system.

You may try to reset the Windows update components:

Simply go to Powershell (admin) or Command Prompt (admin) (Windows key + X)

Type in the scripts after each line.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Restart your computer then try again. If this doesn't solve the windows update issue.

You may also try downloading the Windows Error Solver:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ph/help/10164/...

If that doesn't help, you may refer to the link below and follow all possible solutions provided that might help solve the issue with Windows update.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ph/help/408983...

Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have other queries/concerns.

Quick question. Do I put the scripts in Powershell one line at a time or do I put the works of them all at once?

Also, is this a known issue.

Also, the Windows Error Solver takes me nowhere. In other words, it ask for what version of Windows and there's nothing more there offered for assistance.

Hi Rubert,

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, you need to key in the script one line after each line.

eg

net stop wuauserv press Enter
net stop cryptSvc press Enter and so on.

Hope that helps!

The Powershell stuff didn't work. As said earlier, the Windows Error Solver stops after asking what version of Windows one has. Is this something that Microsoft has stopped or if not, how does one make this work?

Also, can I update from the catalogue although it seems the problem isn't getting it but when it installs, it gets to 100% then shows the error. What do you think?

Thank you for your reply. I did run DISM.....RestoreHealth command the two days before downloading the KB4566782 due the fact I previously downloaded an optional update which failed miserably and required me to run the above command. That was the reason I only ran the sfc /scannow. After your reply, I ran the DISM.....RestoreHealth scan, however the KB4566782 download failed again.
