Spell Check in Word 2019 for Mac

I go through the post carefully and test on my side under 16.36, but I cannot repro the issue. The spelling and gramma checker works normally on my side. in that case, the issue could be related to your local environment. Here are some suggestion to troubleshoot and narrow down the issue.

1. Go to Word>Preferences>Spelling & Grammar, make sure you have checked the option Check spelling as you type.
2. I noticed there is a tab named” Graphics Format” in your screenshot, do you use any third-party Add-ins in Word? Try disable them and check the result.
3. Try use the checker in Tools at top menu>Spelling and grammar or review tabs>spelling or grammatical, does the correct suggestion shows normally?
4. Quit Word app, Move Normal.dotm in /Users/<username>/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates to desktop, open a new word document and check if the issue happen.  If the issue still persists, you can move the normal.dotm back.

If the suggestion above doesn’t help, could you please share information below with us for further troubleshooting?

1. Does the issue happen in a newly created document?
2. Does the issue happen if you type other wrong words?
3. Did you change anything before the issue happen?

Please see the following response to the questions:

   1. This is enabled in the preferences.

   1. Not third party but its a menu I enable through the ribbon because I deal with documents that are heavy with graphics.
3. Try use the checker in Tools at top menu>Spelling and grammar or review tabs>spelling or grammatical, does the correct suggestion shows normally?
   1. Works normally.
4. Quit Word app, Move Normal.dotm in /Users/<username>/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates to desktop, open a new word document and check if the issue happen.  If the issue still persists, you can move the normal.dotm back.
   1. Moved the template file and when I opened the new document the same still happened when I right clicked.

Please the following response on the second half of the questions. 

1. Does the issue happen in a newly created document? Yes, it occurs in all documents regardless of the source. 
2. Does the issue happen if you type other wrong words? it occurs universally with all words. 
3. Did you change anything before the issue happen?I don't recall making changes that would effect this. I have auto updates set up for my office application and do remember the change after an update. I can't recall which update.

Thanks for your updates. The issue could be related to some programs on your Mac or Corrupted Office client. As you can repro the issue on your side in newly created document and using any words.

Here is some suggestion:

1. Open Mac under safe mode check if the issue related to other programs on your Mac, you can follow the article to do so. How to use a "clean startup" to determine whether background programs are interfering with Office for Mac
2. Remove the corrupted cache in Word for Mac and check the result: Quit all Office applications, remove folder /Library/Containers/com.microsoft.word and check result.

3.As a workaround, you may use spelling and grammar in top menu and review tabs.
