Hi
Welcome to Microsoft community.
You can use the method of modifying the registry to achieve the effect you want.
Modifying the names and descriptions of network connections and hardware using the Windows Registry requires caution, as improper changes can lead to system instability. Always back up your registry and create a system restore point before making any changes. Here's how you can modify network connection names and hardware descriptions through the Windows Registry:
Modifying Network Connection Names:
Press Win + R
to open the Run dialog, then type regedit
and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
Under the "Profiles" key, you will find subkeys representing each network connection. These subkeys are named with GUIDs.
Go through the subkeys to find the one that corresponds to the network connection you want to modify.
Inside the subkey, you will find a string value named ProfileName
. Double-click on it and modify the data to the desired network name.
Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to see the updated network name.
Modifying Hardware Descriptions:
Open the Registry Editor by pressing Win + R
, typing regedit
, and pressing Enter.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
Under "Enum," you will find various hardware devices listed in subkeys. Each subkey corresponds to a specific device.
Navigate through the subkeys to find the one that corresponds to the hardware device you want to modify.
Inside the subkey, you will find several subkeys that represent different aspects of the hardware, such as Control
and Device Parameters
.
Look for a string value named DeviceDesc
or FriendlyName
under the appropriate subkey. Modify the value data to the desired hardware description.
Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to see the updated hardware description.
Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
