KB4512508

It seems that I am not alone with this update which failed for me  (win 10 / 32 bit ) ---

It crashed the system, then then after numerous restarted its was backed out  of the system

I found this text in the event log ---

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070057: 2019-08

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x86-based Systems (KB4512508).

In the old days one could exclude and update --- which does not seem to be the case with win 10 ---

Is there now a  way to skip this update?

Is there a way to look up the error code?

Thanks

Mine updated just fine, however a day later it crashed my system to the point that I had no other choice but to do a system restore

Hi fpefpe
I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

I recommend that you do a manual update for this KB.

1. Windows Key+X > Windows Powershell (Admin)
Type following (or copy and paste following) one by one and Enter

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

2. Type following in Windows Start Search box (Cortana) and hit Enter %systemroot%\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log to something else.
If it doesn't allow you to rename - Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer
Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Rename CBS.Log > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update, SFC etc)

3. You can download the updates from Microsoft Catalog and update manually. Search for relevant KB in the Catalog.

Microsoft Catalog - https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

Do let me know if you require any further help on this. Will be glad to help you.
Sincerely yours,

hello -- -Thanks for the reply ---

Is  this process  destructive  will my system now "forget" all the updates it already  installed?

So I still have to manually download the update or will the process you described automatically download it again?  Thanks

fpe

This process is safe. It will not forget any update.
The process will repair the update components. You can check for updates in Windows Key+i > Update & security again or wait for update to flow in automatically.

Hello --- I followed this directions and was able to get the update installed, but you said it was non-destructive, which is not exactly true --- it wiped out the update history and the only  update in the history is  KB4512508

How do I restore the history????

I tried that too, and had to do another system restore. I recommend doing this...https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/3183922/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-windows-update-from-reinstalling-in-windos-update-from-reinstalling-in-windo Then as soon as as it's hidden once you run the file, you might have to restart your PC because other updates within the same batch (if there are any) will fail, so you have to reboot and then run the update again so that any other updates like the Malicious Software removal tool will install

Sorry I couldn't get back to you earlier, I had to shut down my computer due to a thunderstorm and power surges.

I upgraded to version 1903.  Neither the check for updates or Windows Update Assistant have any further updates available.

I followed all of the steps in this post.  I then downloaded the x64 msu from the update catalog (windows10.0-kb4512508-x64_1893edc9a11d760be11e49d2500170ceee8026d7)  When I initiated the .msu update I got a message "The update is not applicable to your computer."

Before renaming the log this update was not listed in installed updates list.

How can I install this critical update?

Thank you.
