After 3 years Windows decides my genuine copy is not genuine anymore

Hi all,

I have a laptop and about 3 years ago I bought a genuine copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (retail version) to use on it. I am 100% sure that the retailer is genuine (ebuyer.com) and that the copy is genuine.

I have never used this serial number on anny other computers (except briefly by accident about 6 months ago as I have two copies of W7 for two different computers and this was resolved immediately) and the original copy is in my office desk and I know that no-one else has access to it. All of a sudden yesterday a pop-up box appeared telling me that my copy of Windows was not genuine. I have gone through all the steps that the pop-up recommended including the MS Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool which reports the licence as invalid.

When I last re-installed W7U about 18 months ago I went through the Windows Activation procedure with no problems.

I have tried to go through the MS website to find out how to contact MS for support on this but cannot find anything other than paid support. I do not believe that I should have to pay to resolve this issue as it is a MS issue and not an issue with my PC. At the moment this is nothign other than an annoyance but I am worried that someone else has installed W7 and used the same key as mine and rather than refuse their activation it has replaced my information with theirs.

Any help with this is gratefully received.

Answer

I would suggest downloading and running the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) from this web site *on the machine in question*. Click "Continue", wait patiently, click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this conversation.

In case you would prefer the link be spelled out:
