Windows 10 resetting default programs on restart/reboot.

There are a couple of programs that I like to have as my default programs, my Browser (Firefox) and my media player (VLC) and I can change them to be the defaults, BUT every time I restart or reboot my computer they get changed back to the windows defaults like Microsoft Edge. How can I prevent/stop this from changing each time I reboot?

Is there a way to make a script or batch file that runs at startup to change them back to what I want?

Well I lost my login info for ToonTownGuy1 and had trouble tying to reset that, so  created this new account...

anyways... that is what I have been doing....but every time I restart my pc, go to launch firefox, it says that is not my default app and when I follow what you said, all of my defaults have been reset back to the Microsoft defaults. The defaults I set only last for that login session... a restart/reboot removes what I set as defaults

Dear MS people, don't waste time and the company money on these banal comments. Users know how to set defaults. THIS DOES NOT HELP.

Win 10 resets to defaults - do you understand what "RE" means? Default was set, but Win 10 RESET it without asking user's permission.

One of factors causing it is often some old app - relatively old, made before Win 10.  Still this is the Win 10 fault, Win 7 didn't do this, there is an inherent flaw in Win 10 that makes it do this.

So please do your job - FIX IT.

I have the same issue and have had this problem with Windows 10 for over a year now it seems. Is there a fix for this yet? Or even some sort of acknowledgement that this is an issue with Windows and is being looked at? The user community here is becoming quite frustrated and the only answers I can seem to find from Microsoft are screenshots on how to set defaults apps..... which isn't the problem.....we know how to set them. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Still having the issue occur with many of our users in our enterprise. With such a relatively minor problem causing such a negative user experience, you would think there would have been a fix a year ago. Hey Microsoft, when I follow your tutorial to set my default apps, it changes back the next day. Also - your latest patch 1709 has been an absolute disaster for enterprises. How about you do a little more testing before FORCING your blatantly obvious, untested updates on private businesses. Thanks.

Same here and these forums seem to be moderated by bots that do not understand the questions asked!   Too often you get a standard response and then there is no followup from MS after you explain that is not a fix

There has gotta be a reghack that can resolve this.

Hi guys!  Let's all take a deep breath.

Isn't that relaxing? And LOOK!

Here's a picture of a bunny with a pancake on his head:

Doesn't that make us all feel a little better?

Okay.

Now, remember, this isn't the official Microsoft Help Desk. This is a Community of (mostly) users just like you who are trying to help each other.

We don't work for Microsoft. We don't get paid by Microsoft. We don't get any rewards of any kind except the satisfaction one feels when helping others to the best of our abilities.

Sometimes we can come up with a solution. More often than not we do, I'm happy to say. That's the advantage of many users working together.

But, sometimes, we don't. That's when we can only suggest that you should contact Microsoft Support directly. Either by using the Feedback App on your computer or by clicking this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ph/contactus/

And have a NICE day!

Ok so that said, does anyone in the long suffering group of MS users here have a way to stop this? It started for me with reboots, but now every time I undock or redock my Surface, Windows is resetting all my default apps. Yes it's relatively minor issue, but considering I dock and undock my Surface multiple times a day, as well as having to restart multiple times a day (this is often the only fix for a multitude of problems my Surface encounters during the day), this is really starting to impact my work.
