KB4530734 causing reboot loop on Win7 SP1.

I applied the December Windows Update patches. My computer went into a reboot loop at the end of the installation so I reverted back to the previous restore point. Upon investigation, all patches had applied except KP4530734 (December Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7). I reapplied all the other patches except that one, and the computer rebooted fine. I then tried re-installing that one and again it went into a reboot loop, restarting about every 6 minutes. I waited more than 2 hours just to be safe, but again had to abort the patch and revert back to the last restore point taken before attempting to apply that patch.

On a positive note, apparently that patch includes the new full-screen MS-nag message about Win7 End-Of-Life that will be displayed in January so at least I won't be seeing that.

Any recommendations on how to proceed?

Do you have the below Kb`s installed.

They are required.

Both those (KB4490628 and KB4474419) were successfully installed when they were released by Windows Update. I have had no outstanding failures of the Windows Update process until now.

Are you still having problems installing Kb4530734 ?

If so wait till the end or close to the end of the month before trying again even though Microsoft stated that they are not aware of any issues with this update.

  • As we are so close to the End of Win 7 i myself have turned Updates to (  Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them ).
  • I have also taken the Check Mark out from : ( Give me recommended Updates the same way i receive important updates. ( This way Updates show a additional pane : optional Updates are available ).

With the above settings i receive a New Update is Available Message / Pop Up down in the bottom left hand side of my Task Bar as to when some updates are available.

It is then my choice if i want to download and install these updates.

It also gives me time to do some research on the particular Kb`s ******  to see what they are about and what will be installed.

I myself would suggest holding off trying to install it.

Canadian Tech has posted many top notch articles on this site in relations to Updating as in what to do ( procedure wise ) and what Updates to install.

I have recently installed a New Hard drive and have tested his suggestions as in how to Update and what Updates to Install.

His method worked quickly and flawlessly on my computer, ( many thanks to Canadian Tech ).

Of course there were a few updates that differed that i needed in relations to certain products that i run which i located and installed.

Bottom Note :

Always run a good quality Anti Virus and a good quality Anti Malware product in any case.

I have not tried installing it a third time. Both previous times resulted in having to cancel the update in the middle of the reboot loop by powering off and then reverting to the last restore point from Safe Mode. It also required additional re-synchronization steps since that sort of forced power cycling tends to invalidate RAID arrays.

As for the Windows Update process, what you describe is precisely how I have been installing Microsoft's patches for years. No automatic update, notify me when new updates are available and let me apply them (Important/Suggested) as needed. Unless someone has a better idea, I will probably simply "hide" this update so that the taskbar notification is cleared and then wait for the next (last?) updates to come out in January before I try again.

I have both good AV and Anti-Malware which run regularly.

Several of the other recent Windows Update problems here "might" be similar to what I'm seeing. The laptop user who's updates were running for hours and the dual boot user whose updates failed could both be symptoms of the same problem I have.

Thank you for your advice.

I've had the same issue with two 64 bit Windows 7 systems that I patched this month with December 2019 patches.

Windows 7 32 bit doesn't seem to be affected.

I am holding out on patching anymore with December's patches until I can verify that it is working correctly.
