Cannot associate .jar files with java on windows 10

Hi, I've been having trouble associating .jar file type to java on my windows. It's currently associated with internet explorer, and java is not showing up as something I can associate this file type with. What should I do? Java control center is showing up, and I have it installed correctly, but I cannot download anything and have it be connected to java, it immediately associates itself with internet explorer.
Hi Hannah. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 10 year Windows MVP here to help you.

I've tried doing all of that, but my problem is that when I download a .jar file it doesn't download as java if that makes sense. Also, when I tried typing in  C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%1" % it didn't work. It said "Access denied."

I don't need to open a .jar file. I need to download it without it being associated with internet explorer. Like it doesn't have the java icon, but instead has the internet explorer icon.

Hannah, that's why I gave you what I could find about how to regain the association between .jar files and Java. Did you see the suggestion to reinstall Java runtime to do this? Those links were chosen because they give various ways to recover the .jar file association to Java.

Hi HannahTorello

Jar file associations can be extremely hard to fix, this is a known issue

Click the link below to download a tiny utility that does not need to be installed,

Run that and your jar file associations will be fixed in a couple of seconds . . .
