Same domain in two tenants? Is it possible now??

Hello!

I was under the impression that a domain could only be present in a single tenant at a time. I just happened to try to add a domain to a tenant, and that domain is currently verified in another tenant. To my amazement, it worked! I got a TXT-value back, but I have not verified it yet. I am kind of afraid to do it as I see many risks here! If it indeed is possible, how will autodiscover fint the correct mailbox and how will the portal know what account to log on if it is the same username in two tenants?

Did I miss something here or have you simply changed the workflow so that this check is done at a later stage?

Or is it indeed so that it should work nowadays and we simply must be VERY careful when doing migrations and such? I CAN see benefits of course as well. Either way, if this is an architectural change I need to know about it right now.

hi henrik,

we can only add a domain in one office 365 tenant.

in your scenario, the domain isn’t added to the tenant successfully, because it has not been verified. if you continue to add the txt record and verify the domain, you will get an error as follows:
“domain was already added to a different office 365 account ***.onmicrosoft.com.”
