Windows 10 1809 update fails with message 0xc1900101.

I first tried to install Windows 10 update Version 1809 twice on 4th October 2018 with message 0xc1900101.

A couple of days after my failed second attempt I learned of issues with this update so I stopped trying until mid-December.

I have lost track of the number of failed attempts since then.

Windows Update does not recognise that Version 1809 exists. I then tried using Windows 10 update assistant. Downloading V 1809 was fine but when it came to installing the update it failed at 42% of installation and would begin to undo the changes and bring me back to V 1803.

As stated, I tried many times without Windows 10 update assistant. I tried many times with the assistant as well but come the dreaded figure of 42% installation completion it would fail and begin to undo the changes and back to V 1803.

In my Update history the following is written:

˅  Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809 (2)

Hi,

My name is Angel. I am an Independent Advisor. Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I would suggest you to follow these methods:

Method 1.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

1.Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and then select Open or Save in the pop-up window:
https://aka.ms/wudiag

Notes
• If the pop-up doesn’t come up, you might have a pop-up blocker on. If you’re using Microsoft Edge, instructions for disabling the pop-up blocker are here. For Internet Explorer, instructions are here. If you are using a different browser or separate pop-up blocker, check the website of the browser or blocker’s manufacturer.
• If you select Save, you need to go to the folder where the troubleshooter is downloaded to after the download is complete, and then double-click the latest wu.diagcab file to run the troubleshooter.

2.Select Next and follow the steps in the wizard to find and fix problems with Windows Update .

Method 2.

Download the most recent Servicing Stack Update (SSU)

Determine whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit Windows:
1. From Start, choose Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Click About.
4. Scroll down to System type.
Download the version of the latest SSU (KB4456655) that matches your version of Windows from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Restart your device and check for updates.
Did this resolve the issue?

Method 3.

Download the most recent KB

1. Go to the Update history page. https://support.microsoft.com/help/12387/window...
2. Find the most recent update KB for the version of Windows 10 you have – it’s usually at the top of the list – and either write the KB number down or copy it.
3. Go to the Microsoft Update site and search for the KB number. http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Hom...
4. Select the link for the download, and then choose Download. Select Save if you are prompted.
5. When the download completes, select Open to start the update.

Method 4.

Fix Windows file corruption

Important
You need to run both the DISM and SFC commands shown below, not just one of them.
1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, right click the Windows button, and then select Command Prompt (Admin). If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Yes.
2. Type the following command, and then press Enter.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Note It might take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
3. Type the following command and press Enter.
sfc /scannow
Note It might take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
4. Close the command prompt, and then run Windows Update again.

Method 5.
Perform an in-place upgrade

Download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (MCT) https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/win... and use it to perform an “in-place upgrade” of Windows 10. We have a video that can show you how if you aren’t sure. https://aka.ms/W10CleanInstall

Hi Remo, please try this:

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run this command and hit Enter:

net stop wuauserv

Leave Command prompt open

Open File Explorer, on the View ribbon, temporarily turn on 'Hidden Items'

Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete the entire contents of the Download folder

Close File Explorer

Then try running that update

If that does not succeed, with these major upgrades, the most successful method is to upgrade from the Windows 10 ISO - you download the ISO and then perform an Offline Upgrade, if 1809 is going to install correctly, this will give it the best possible chance . . .

Click this link:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...
to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), then choose ISO

When the ISO file completes downloading

Disconnect from the Internet

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe to begin the upgrade . . .

Hi,
Try updating to 1809 using Media Creation tool and if it fails let us know.

The fastest way to get the upgrade is through Media creation tool or ISO file.
Please download Media Creation Tool from the link below and select Upgrade this PC at the first screen.

ts better to download latest windows 10 1809  iso file via  internet using any of the browser.

after downlaod completes ,move  the  iso to file  to  E:\  drive

Move of  copy  all the files  from downloads  and  documents  folders  to  E:\users\

then extract the iso , run setup.exe  as an adminstrator . Wait  for atleast 45 minutes to complete installations

That is not an answer to me, i have been on the same windows build since 2015 with people always claiming that the only way to solve said properly is a reinstall.

Even when my boot loader seemed to have been damaged and unrecoverable a fix was out there and there was no need to reinstall.

I understand no one found a solution yet and that 1809 is still very broken and undeployable for some machines if that is the case.

The problem is not from windows but from your hardware or from an old driver. In my case the problem was an old one Intel graphics driver. So the fresh install of windows install the compatible drivers. The fresh install is the only way if you don't know the problem with your hardware.

hmm I tried removing most of the old intel drivers I had from when this build was still running an intel cpu, I will try to purge all traces of that.

Thank you very much for the idea!
