In System Properties Security Center, Automatic Updates, I have it set to do automatic updates. In the task bar notification area in the lower right hand corner of the screen the icon says automatic updates are turned off. Can't turn them on by clicking
on the icon. Updates are obviously off because the computer never updates. How to turn them back on when the Security Center says they're already on but the status icon says they're off and can't be turned on? Am running XP Pro Service Pack 3.

The Automatic Updates service is missing etc.
Follow the article for reinstall of the service/services.
