Unable to perform Windows update with error code 800B0001

Original Title: Windows Update says it has to update Windows Update to proceed but it fails with error 800B0001.  I have a Windows 7 Professional x64 system

 

Windows Update says it can not scan for additional updates until a newer version of Windows Update is installed.  When I click the button to install the newer version, it immeidately fails with error code 800B0001.  Windows Update worked correctly up until this afternoon when it first failed.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost
