C:Windows\system32\Config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible. Access is Denied.u

I got this error message once login after a window update "C:Windows\system32\Config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible. Access is Denied."  I am using Windows 7 Home Edition.

My desktop becomes black.  All my icons are gone.  The toolbar at the bottom became grey.  How can this be resolved?
I had once unable to access my user account.  Are these occurrence related?
Thanks

My screen didn't turn black. I successfully login to my account, but all the personalization was gone, and the error message came up

C:Windows\system32\Config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible. Access is Denied.

I have the same problem in Windows 8.1 Pro.
I am amazed that nobody from Microsoft have answered even from 2011 to this issue !

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. Sorry for the delay.

The issue may occur due to corrupted system files or conflict with third party application or permissions issue.

Let us try the methods below and check if it helps.

Method 1

Try to Run SFC Scan.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Method 2

Try to place the system in Clean Boot. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. It starts Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.
How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" in the above link.

Method 3

Try to install all Windows updates which may include driver updates.

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, then click Search.)
  2. Enter Windows Update in the search box. Click on it to open.
  3. Then click on Check for updates. Click on Install updates.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

After turning off the Windows laptop last night, I found a couple of things wrong today that did not allow to make any repairs:

1) First message:  "C:Windows\system32\Config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible..."

All icons are gone; the screen is black except for the background picture in the center; the Windows logo does not respond to right/left clicks and only I.E. works.

I turned off the laptop and restarted it again, only to see an AOL message:

2) "The main.idx database file is damaged. (ERROR 65-FONL). A file needed by your AOL desktop software (main.idx) has been damaged. To fix problem, download the AOL Desktop Software: http://daol.aol.com/software and click on 'download now'"

I tried your suggestions above but they all required AOL's assistance. Since AOL reports a damaged file, I have not been able to follow your instructions or to reinstall their software. When I click on the above link, nothing happens.  I guess I first have to find a way to fix the Windows problem so that I can reinstall AOL.

AOL opens up via I.E.; however, their download buttons do not work and search capabilities are frozen.  I shall mention that AOL is working on my other laptop; regretfully, this laptop is where all have all my MS Word documents and other important data saved.

Please advise. Thank you very much.

Myrty
