Word 2013 endnotes formatting

I am trying to convert some WordPerfect files to Word 2013 and it's a mess. The fact that this is a long, slow process should not annoy me (but it does), but the thing I'm having no luck with is the fact that trying to restyle my WP footnotes to Word endnotes is proving impossible.  I have "converted the footnotes to endnotes" but the formatting has changed and remains hidden.  Word has apparently decided that endnotes must be in small Roman numerals, and has grayed-out the option to change that.  Also, the Style "Endnote Reference" is "hidden until used" but remains hidden even when used.  I expect there is some simple, if hidden, way to fix all this, but I can't find it.  Any ideas?
If you right-click endnote text (in the endnote area) and click Note Options on the context menu, Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. Change the "Number Format" as desired and click Apply. This will only work if the endnotes have been properly converted to Word format, of course.

Thank you very much, but I forgot to mention that I would like to enclose the numbers within [brackets], too.  Is there a way to change that sort of formatting?

There is no way to have Word add the brackets automatically, unfortunately. You can add them manually, of course.

For existing endnotes, you can make use of Find and Replace. Where do you want the brackets? Only in the footnote area, or also in the main body of the document?

No, but you can do it via Find/Replace, where:

Find = (no text)

plus the 'Endnote Reference Style'

Replace = [^&]
