Black screen after welcome screen in Windows 7 and cannot access Task Manager

Original Title - Black screen after welcome. Can't restore. Can't get Task Manager. No curser, either. Help!

Have Windows 7. I can login to my acct (I am administrator)... Welcome comes on and thinks for a few secs then goes  to a black screen with no curser. I can't bring up Task Manager. Restore doesn't work. I can't access a system image or boot a disk. Malware, anti-virus/spyware is picking up nothing. I can only use by hitting F8 and choosing safe mode with networking. I was able to access other accts, but now even those do the same. Help please (if possible)! What else do you need to know?

Answer

Hi cherrybim,

Method 1:
I would suggest you try using the Last known good configuration. It is aWindows startup option that uses the most recent system settings that worked correctly. Every time you turn your computer off andWindows shuts down successfully, important system settings are saved in the registry. So it startsWindows with the last registry and driver configuration that worked successfully.

You may refer to the below links for further assistance on the issue -

Method 2:
If the issue persists you may try uninstalling and reinstalling the display drivers from device manager –

a. Click Start, and then click  Control Panel.

b. Click System and Maintenance, click  System, and then click Device Manager.
Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click  System, and then click  Device Manager.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

c. In Device Manager, expand Display Driver, right-click the display devices, and then click properties and under the  driver tab
    click on  Uninstall.

d. When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.

e. Restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed. Check after this procedure. Also check if you have any exclamation mark or cross marks alongside the display devices listed in device manager.

Method 3:
If the issue still persists I would suggest you to follow the below steps and check -
a. Click on  Start button and type  Regedit in Instant Search text box, and then hit Enter.
b. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon’

c. On the right side of the screen check the value of Shell. It should be explorer.exe and nothing else. If it is not that then double click Shell and in the Value Data box typed in  Explorer.exe and clicked OK.

d. On the right side of the screen check the value of Userinit. It should be  C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe and nothing else. If it is not that then double click Userinit and in the Value Data box type in  C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe and click OK.

e. Exit the registry editor. Restart the machine and check if the issue resolves.
