Windows 10 April 2018 Update - How to get it now

You may be in for a long wait before Windows Update makes it available for your computer.

I’ll show you an easy way to install the update now without a lengthily wait before it is your turn (Microsoft will not make the update to everyone at the same time). So I'll show you how to get Windows Update to do its job now and download and install the update.

Three important things to do before you start the update when it becomes available:

A) Create an image backup of your current version of Windows 10. Should the update fail you can restore the image to your disk drive and try again.

B) Disable any third party Anti-Virus software you may have installed!

C) Laptop users should not install the upgrade while running on battery power only !!!

How to install the update:

1) Click on the link

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/

2) Now click on the Windows 10 icon.

3) Click on the ‘Update now’ button as show below.

4) You will have the option to ‘Save’ or ‘Save and run’. If you “Save” the file you can install the update at your convenience.

5) Next you will be prompted to “Update to the latest version of Windows 10. Click on the ‘Update Now’ button in the lower right corner.

6) A check to see if your PC is compatible is made and if it is you will see the following message as shown below.

7) Click ‘Next’ to continue with the upgrade process. The download will start.

8) After the download has completed the update process begins. This may take some time depending on the performance level of your PC. Note that Laptops usually take longer.

You may also see a slowdown of the update progress at around the 75% to 85% complete range. Your disk drive activity LED however should be flashing rapidly and without any significant pauses.

9) Next you will see the “Your update is ready” message. Click on the ‘Restart now’ button to continue.

10) You will be signed out and the PC will restart, at which point you should see “Working on update”. A second restart /reboot will take place with the Working on update message. Once again another restart / reboot and the “Working on update” message is displayed, this one takes a while compared to the two previous reboots / restarts.

11) One final restart / reboot / and another lengthily (Appears to take a while to get past the 84% mark) working on updates process is displayed.

12) Next the lock screen is displayed, click and enter your password to continue with the last part of the update process (You should see several messages displayed). Close the Edge browser and you will see the following “Thank you” message.

That’s it, you’re done. For verification of the version number, in the ‘Search’ box type:  winver  and tap the ‘Enter’ key. Your PC should now be at version 1803, (build 17134.1).

This years (2018) Spring update has not yet been released. Should be available as early as April 2nd or as late April 9th or 10th.

Please note that since I have not yet installed it since it not yet available  the instruction posted are:

1) At this time is temporary and subject to change once the Spring Creators Update (version 1803) is released.

2) Some information is at this time based on last years Fall Creators Update (Version 1709 / Build 16299) and will be updated once this years (2018) Spring Creators Update is released. For now just substitute Spring wherever you see the word Fall in the details listed below.

Hey. I joined the windows insider program about three weeks ago and i got this Spring creators update installed but it was really slowing down my laptop so after 4 days i quit the program and took the option to rollback to the previous build. The rollback went well but after it completed, my windows defender engine was missing leaving my laptop vulnerable and my speakers stop functioning completely. I tried updating my Windows defender but it refused completely so i reset windows 10(Pro). Everything came back to normal apart from my speakers so i reinstalled my speakers drivers, uninstalled and redownloaded them, i even tried Razer's drivers that i had been using initially but nothing worked. I contacted Microsoft about the issue and they told me to rejoin the insider program. to see if the problem came from downgrading from the build. I did and i got the spring creators update installed 3 days ago but my speakers still arent working and my laptop has become slow as it was after installing the update. Im really confused ad i dont know what to do so they referred me to this thread to get some help. Sorry for the long message but i hope it can help diagnose my issue. Thanks a lot

This years (2018) Spring update still has not yet been released. What you have installed is the Windows Insider build (17133) which after the Spring Creators update has been released will once again start updating every week or two with another Insider build.

What you need to do is install last Fall's (October of 2017) Creators update and then run Windows Update until all update from last October until now have been installed.

Note: You also have the option to use Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ISO:
The Creators Update is also available using the Media Creation Tool.

i already installed the fall creators update in February. I wonder why it updated to the 1733 build when i had set my frequency of insider updates to just app fixes and drivers. When i read about the spring creators update it stated that those in the insider program will recieve the update earlier before its global roll out. So should i just wait for the update?

But literally everybody and their dog (including a dozen or more high-tech PC journalists) are saying to use the "Windows Insider" method to obtain the update immediately!  Why the dichotomy, all the sudden?

I quit the insider program then reverted to 16299.334 and immediately the windows spring update began to download and now its installed. Reverting to the previous build might cause issues with windows defender like me but once the update is installed everything will be back to normal

Insider builds are "Pre-release" versions and may contain bugs, as did the original 1803 and an update was required. ( Complete list of Windows Insider builds released after the Fall Creators Update, how to check what your build is currently installed and Best new feature )

Microsoft may have found additional bugs which nearly everybody and their dog have reported.

This is why I do not recommend using "Windows Insider" builds on  PC you use for everyday use.
