Hitachi External Hard disk not detected on Windows 7. Disk Management shows ‘No Media’

OP: New Computer with Windows 7 cannot view files on external Hitachi hard drive

My Hitachi hard drive is compatible with Windows 7.  This hard drive has been working properly with  my older computer using Windows XP.  I can see the device in the Device Manager, but I cannot view files.  In Disk Management, the drive is listed in the lower portion of the screen but says "No Media," however there is nearly 50 gb of information stored.

The hard drive shows in the list of devices and printers when I open that folder, but does not show up in the list of hard disk drives on My Computer.

I still don't understand what happened, but I have determined how to fix it.

After trying my locked-up hard drive on 4 computers having Windows installed (two with Windows 7 and two with XP) and having no success, I decided to plug it into a computer using a Linyx based operating system (Obuntu).  The computer recognized my hard drive and unlocked it.  Then I was able to use in on the Windows system.  I managed to freeze the hard drive a second time, and cured it the same way.  Maybe this will help you too, if you have access to a computer with that operating system.  Maybe a mac would work also.
