Centering Images by Default

Is there a way that I can have Word 2010 center images automatically when I insert them? I am working with a restricted Word template that does not allow writers to click on the "centering" button in the formatting toolbar. By default, images are left-justified, but I'd like to change this to "centered."

Any ideas?
Could you add centered Picture content controls where users are allowed to add images? Can users center images using Ctrl+E?

Or define a paragraph style, based on the Normal style (or other standard text style), that just adds the Centered alignment, and add that style to the list of allowed ones. Name it something like Picture Position.

I was not sure how to enable picture content controls in a restricted template, but I was able to do the following based on the suggestions:
  • Created a centered paragraph style based on Normal and called the style "Image Centered."
  • Ensured that this new style was "Permitted" in the list of styles.
  • Created a short-cut key "CTRL-E" for the new style "Image Centered."

Thanks for your help!

And you're fine until your users discover that Ctrl+E works to center paragraphs just as they expect (not noticing that they've applied a different style).

Thanks for pointing out the danger of adding Ctrl+E to the new "image centering" style! I removed the shortcut for the new style.

Thanks again!

You could still assign a keyboard shortcut; just pick something that isn't already assigned to something else. Ctrl+E, Ctrl+Shift+E, and Alt+Ctrl+E are all assigned, but Alt+Ctrl+Shift+E is not. Ditto for commands with C (Alt+Ctrl+Shift+C is available). Or you could work with I (for image) or P (for picture).
