Windows 7 update hangs at create restore point.

To understand the issue better, let me know what is the Knowledge Base Article numbers of the failing Windows Updates?

This issue could have occurred due to these reasons:

1. Corrupt Windows Update Components.

2. Corrupt System Files.

Try the steps listed here:

Method 1:
I suggest you to reset Windows Update Components and check if it helps.

Method 2:
If the issue persists, you may run System File Checker (SFC) tool and check if it fixes the issue. SFC scan would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

1.       Does the process freeze at the time of creating a restore point?

2.       Do you get any error message or code?

3.       Does the computer freeze or just the Windows Update window?

Step 1: you can put the computer in a clean boot state and then try to install these updates. Follow the below mentioned steps.

1.       Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start theSystem Configuration Utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

2.       On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup itemscheck box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

3.       On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then clickDisable all.

4.       Click OK, and then click Restart.

5.       Now try installing the updates.

Note: Make sure you put the computer back to Normal Startup once troubleshooting is completed.

Ok, second first... I ran the 'scan checker tool' before posting and it came up "No problems found"...ran it after doing your method 1...(and update still hanging at the 'creating a restore point) This run, same thing, "No problems found".

Now to your "method 1"

Following the steps in order that you entered: (.dlls listed did what was expected) NOTE: Did skip step 4)

STEP 2.

Appidsvc.dll..........not started

STEP 6.

regsvr.exe mshtml...............not recognized.

                  shdocvw.dll.....was loaded but no entry point dllregisterServer found

                  browseui.dll....failed to load

                  msxml.dll.........   "            "

To save some typing, the following regsrv.exe got the "Failed to load" message.

gpkcsp.dll

sccbase.dll

sibcsp.dll

initki.dll

Wuaueng.dll....make sure binary is loaded at path, or debug

wultui.dll........... same as above

wuweb.dll......... same as above

qmgr.dll............ was loaded but entry point not found

muweb.dll......... failed to load 

STEP 9.

net start cryptsvc......already been started (brought up "Fix it") ran it, and told to run update.

                                Did so and it showed "searching for updates failed.

Everything else you listed ran ok, or showed as ok, stopped, started, etc.

Rebooted PC and tried running update.

Found 10 major, 1 suggested update.

I selected one small update (about 500 KB), clicked "install updates"

Started and when it got to the "creating restore point" hung... I waited over 5 minutes for the restore to do something or go to the next step...it never finished the restore point.

Stopped and closed update...

Now I keep a watch on what starts during start up (I'm the only one using this computer and no one else has access to it) Nothing new has bee added in the start up since the last successful windows update.

There was one post that suggested disabling the VSS. I tried and found the ability to use change the settings...were all grayed out.

I tried disabling it using a 3rd party software program. The 'disable', it showed it disabled, and then changed right back to 'manual'. 

I've added no software since the last update...

I've run Norton full system scan for viruses...

The PC/ other programs run fine except for the windows update.

Out of ideas...                

1) No the little header is still moving color showing the program is working. But never finished creating a restore point.

2) There are no error codes, as I shut updates down manually. (the longest I let it run was 15 minutes and it never did leave the restore part of the sequence)

3)Nothing actually freezes, it just never leaves the check point creation. Not can I create a check point as I uses a 3rd party imager that I've used for years.

And Yes, this and everything else was running just fine, now and the last time I successfully updated windows.

No new programs, nothing I'm aware of changed since the last update the worked as it should...as I replied to the above reply... I'm out of ideas.

 Did you try performing Clean Boot as suggest by himanshudogra on March 14, 2015? If not, please try those steps and check if it helps.

Still hangs on create restore point.

Finally went into the "system restore' and turned it off (I use a 3rd party disk imager anyway) this fixed the problem and I was able to install the updates now...

I have no idea why the restore point doesn't work (unless one of the files is corrupt) but short of doing a major windows repair (or reinstall) which usually destroys some of the non windows files on the PC, I'll just do it this way...

NOTE TO OTHERS: If you are going to do this...MAKE SURE YOU USE ANOTHER DISK IMAGER!!! Do not run your PC without doing regular images or backups.

To turn off the "create restore point"

1) Click "control panel"  

2) Click "System"

3) Click "System protection" in the left pane.

4) Click on "Configure"

5) Click on "Turn off system protection"

This should correct the restore point from locking updates off... If it does not you have other problems. If you leave this turned off, I strongly recommend using a 3rd party disk imaging program and make regular restore points.

Thanks for the help guys, but nothing seemed to work that you suggested to this point...and as I'm still covered with my 3rd party imager, this allowed me to get the updates. ;-)

Thank you for the reply. Good to know that you were able to install the Windows Updates.

This issue may also occur due to a third party disk imager application. The third party disk imager application might be conflicting with the System Restore. It might be preventing Windows from creating a restore point as it will be already handled by the third party disk imager application.

This issue may also occur due to virus infection. If you still want to perform steps to find the cause of the issue, you may run a full scan using antivirus software. Check if it helps.

Pretty much have done everything above.

Have used RBRX for years now and this version of RBRX for over year now and all worked fine until this month when I did my manual update and it failed.

Ran Norton 360 full scan a couple of times, nothing detected.

Did all this before posting the problem... All I can think of now, is a corrupt file somewhere that MS didn't detect with the troubleshooting pgms.
