Bluetooth not working, USB device descriptor request failed (Error 43)

Hey folks, as title says.

It shows in device manager:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

A request for the USB device descriptor failed.

Location: Port_#0009.Hub_#0001

I am beating my head against the wall. It's an Intel Bluetooth adapter, on an ASUS FX502VML (BIOS shows GL502VMZ)

I can't update drivers because windows doesn't recognize it, so any attempt to install drivers is met with an error message that no compatible hardware is found. I've tried "have disk" and it refuses to force the installation.

What else can I do? I've disabled fast startup, disabled selective suspend, and done everything I've found in literally a hundred different forum threads to fix this. A lot of dead ends and a lot of other people are having similar issues with no result.

On desktops, people say to pull the power cable and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, restart and it'll be fixed. but on a laptop with an integrated battery this is extremely hard to do.

hi jtgrindrod

Code error 43 occurs when Device Manager stops a hardware device because it informed Windows that it is having some type of unspecified problem. It could be perfectly related to Bluetooth controllers. I suggest you follow one of the following methods:

Method 1. Problem Solver.
Start the hardware problem solver:

1. Press the Windows key and type a solution in the search bar

2. Click on Troubleshooting (Control Panel) at the top of results

3. On the new screen, click on View all, in the left column

4. Click on Hardware and Devices

5. Click on Advanced options, so that the box Apply repairs automatically is checked. Click Next and check if the solver solves the problem.

Method 2. Uninstall USB drivers
1. Open the Device Manager

2. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers

3. Uninstall each of the USB devices listed

4. Restart the computer. When restarting Windows it will automatically search for hardware changes
5. Open the Device Manager and reinstall all the USB drivers you had uninstalled.

Method 3. Induction to the correct installation of the device.
1. Open the Device Manager

2. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers

3. On each of the USB devices, right click and choose Update driver software

4. Choose Find driver software on the computer and Choose from a list of drivers. If more than one appears, try each one.

5. Restart the computer.

Method 4. Install the latest chipset driver from the manufacturer's website.
Access the manufacturer's website to download and install the latest chipset drivers for your device.

Thanks for the response, I had already attempted those items but they may help someone else :)

I finally fixed it though. If anyone else comes across this, I drained the battery completely so that it wouldn't respond at all when I hit the power button.  I then held down the power button for a minute.   Plugged in, booted to windows, hard shutdown, then logged in, and now the device was an "unknown device" with a valid hardware ID.  This allowed me to go in, update the driver, and it installed.  Yay!
