Have upgraded (?) to Win 10. Cannot install printer, cannot install Hawking Print Server. Have removed all printers with the exception of the OKI I have been trying to install as I get message that driver is unavailable and uninstall fails. These were working beautifully on Win 8.1

I get message "Print Server

Found the solution to my Print Spooler error after Windows 10 upgrade: "Windows could not start the Print Spooler service on the local computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Thanks to http://www.registryrecycler.com/blog/2013/12/how-to-fix-printing-error-in-windows-8-1/ for the fix. Apparently some Windows 8.1 upgrades had the same problem.

A registry change is required. Make sure you have a Registry backup before making changes.

  • Press Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run box.
  • Type regedit in the Run box and hit Enter to open Registry Editor.
  • Confirm the UAC message by clicking the Yes button.
  • In the left pane of Registry Editor, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to find the key below.
  • SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler.
  • While the Spooler key is highlighted, navigate the right pane to allocate the value DependOnService.
  • Double click this String value to Modify the data within.
  • The value data field should contain the text saying RPCSS, followed by http in the next line.
  • Select and delete the letters http and click OK button to save your changes.
  • Leave the RPCSS part of the value data as it is written.
  • Close Windows registry and Restart your computer.

I gave up.

I finally was able to get the print spooler started on my machine which previously ran Win7 however it still would not work with my Hawking Server and OKI Data printer. I rolled this machine back to Win 7 today.

The machine which previously ran Win 8.1 the print spooler will not start so I do not even have the ability to print to pdf.  For this reason I also an unable to uninstall any printer software.

In the meantime, through all the troubleshooting, I read many articles about privacy invasion which comes along with Win 10. All of this together makes Win10 very unattractive. I am rolling back my second machine today.

I have the same problem.  I followed the same procedure, except that I did not have to stop the Printer spooler service as it is not running,  and get the same error.

I hope someone can suggest a solution to this.

I'm having the exact same problem: Print spooler won't start since my upgrade to Windows 10, yesterday.

I can't add printer, but the device manager sees it as an unknown device.  When you try to add the printer it gives you an error saying the print spooler is stopped.  Trying to start it from the cmd line (Net start spooler) or from the services.msc fails.  In the services spooler menu, when you try to start the spooler (set to automatic, btw), you get the same error: 0x800706b9.  I've tried all the fixes above, but no love...does anybody have any ideas???

The printer is a Canon ip2600, and of course, there are no windows10 specific drivers for it.

I also have a brand new HP5745 printer that cannot be installed, so it's not a lack of up to date drivers.  It is a failure for the print spooler to be started.

Thanks for any help!!

Jerry

Hi,

Suggest you to try installing the available printer drivers in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

a. Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.

b. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8/8.1 or 7 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Hope this will address your query.

Hi,

Sorry this did not have any effect, however note since the Print Spooler was never running (which was the problem) the first step to stop the Print Spoller was redundant.    Status- The Print Spooler cannot be started.
