Windows 7 boots to black screen with cursor before login screen, nothing works

I turned my computer on yesterday to find that, after the Windows loading screen, everything went black. The cursor is there and will move around, but right clicking does nothing, Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing, safe mode does nothing, system restore does nothing, startup repair does nothing, absolutely nothing on earth will get me to the login screen. I've tried every solution on every website I could find and none of them did anything.

If it helps, I was mucking around with ownership of the c partition before this started and, well aware of the inherent risks, I transferred ownership of the entire partition to myself, which more then likely affected the c:\windows & \system32 folder. Then, after turning off my computer, everything went to black. What should I do?

1. What exactly happens when you perform startup repair, system restore and log into safe mode?

I would suggest you to boot the computer using the last known good configuration.

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

when i boot using safe mode, you see the usual scrolling of white on black, but again the black screen appears with only the active curser. last known good configuration has no effect either. still the same result when booting. I have tried all these before, but still no change.

Have you tried an SFC /scannow? you may want to try the offline version in your case,

Post back the results of startup repair and system restore so that we can guide you better.
 
Further, let us know if you performed system file check scan (SFC scan) on your computer. If so do post back the results.

sorry for the delayed response, I thought I found a solution on another post, how-ever it has helped.

 

The below link states an issue that was virtually identical to mine, so I followed the instructions:

Now when the computer boots, I can see the normal background of the login screen for Win7, and the curser moves, how-ever the below error now appears:

Progam: C:\Windows\system32\nvvsvc.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

For this particular issue with runtime error, refer the steps mentioned below.
 
Perform a clean boot of the computer.
 
Clean boot-   It’s a process wherein you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.  A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
 
Please refer the following link to obtain information on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Check if the issue persists in clean boot.

NOTE: Ensure you perform the step 7 mentioned under “Reset the computer to start as usual” after you check if the issue persists in clean boot, at the above link.

i can not perform the clean boot as suggested in that KB article.

the run time error i described in my previous post is all i get, I can't login to windows still.

i appreciate the help :) any more ideas?

Just thought I would let people know of this bazarre cause of my blank screen with cursor.

This happened soon after installing win 7 as a dual boot with my existing XP.

Turned on pc, it went to default win7, brought up the windows logo then nothing except a cursor. 

Tried disconnecting everything, turning power off and all the remedies on the net but ended up reinstalling.

2 days later, after loading all my programs it did it again. This time I had made a system recovery disc and manualy did a restore point after every program installation.

 Used the recovery disc, did a systen restore and away it went. Went through everything, cleaned things up with Regcure then rebooted only to get the dreaded black screen of death again. Repeated the restore proceedure, away it went!

After a bit of detective work I had a good look at Regcure because it was not remembering it's settings and there it was....

Somehow it was picking up the program from the old XP version of windows and running it from there. Every time I cleaned up the systen it was removing the "un-necceassry as far as XP was concerned" boot files for Win 7

So, something to keep in mind. Make sure all programs are actualy installed in 7, not picked up from the old program files.
