Option to restore default settings for stock (Windows 10) Power Plans not unavailable

Does the computer have an OEM-supplied power-management application that is installed? If this is the case, look for updates, or test by disabling it. Many times, the OEM may augment the power-management policies by customizing the policies for their specific device.  

Also, review Windows Update. The Windows Update service is a key item to review. Windows Update may have updated drivers available that may be relevant to your current issue. Many times, updated drivers are listed in the "Optional" section of Windows Update. Install any pending updates on the pc to check if that helps.

Further try the below Methods if the issue still persists.

Method 1: Run the Power troubleshooter on the system.

Refer these steps:

1. Press Windows key + X, select Control panel.
2. Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons
3. Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
4. Run the Power troubleshooter

If Method 1 doesn’t help, try Method 2.

Method 2:

Run System File Checker scan and check if there are any system files missing or got corrupted.

System file check is a utility built into the Operating System that will check for system file corruption the sfc /scannow command (System File Check) scans the integrity of all protected operating system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions where possible.

Update on 30th November 2015

Hi Pawan,

I tried all the above and it didn't work. Maybe because my laptop is a 2-1 Tablet-Notebook?

Anyway, there were some other issues that didn't get solved--mouse working erratically, driver conflicts/non availability of some drivers etc,  so I have gone back to Windows 8.1. That solved all the problems. So I think I will stick to Windows 8.1 for now.

This is not to say that Windows 10 is not good. I will be upgrading to it later on. Only, I feel that like with any huge project, Windows 10 is still in its teething stages and needs to iron out some issues. I'll upgrade to it after a few months. It's free till July 2016 anyway, no?

I have the same problem. Hate to tell you this but it's June 2016 and MS has not fixed the problem still.  Nor have they fixed a host of other nuisance issues.  I was initially excited about W10. But if you do not use the MS cloud or Cortana, then there really is very little about W10 that makes it better than W7 or W8.  I believe the only reason MS issued W10 was to get everyone using their cloud and Cortana so that they could sweep up more personal information about us.

I am also having this problem and the supplied "solution" from MS support is not addressing it.

My computer was JUST fully reset 6 days ago.  I have the absolute latest, customer-released version of Win10, updates, etc.  The reset was a full reset, saving personal data but deleting all software.  Their are no out-of-date drivers.  This is not a driver issue.

This is a Microsoft issue.

To reiterate the issue that I am having (and others who have posted here and elsewhere on the internet):

In Windows 10 > Power Options > Advanced Settings > the "Restore Plan Defaults" option is "grayed-out" (for all of the plan options).

Running cmd (Admin): powercfg –restoredefaultschemes only returns "The power scheme, subgroup or setting specified does not exist."

Running Troubleshooter > Power does nothing regarding this problem (it merely recommended that I switch from Performance to Balanced power plan).

Running scan /sfc does nothing.

Please provide an actual solution.

Thanks for your reply.  First, I see TeamProBono's reply Dec 4th. However, I see no actual reply, just a reiteration of my own comments.  (BTW, were talking about a 6 month delay in my last comment and TeamProBono's non response.)  But I thank you for your reply just the same.

Second, I have learned to live with this issue as I have with other glitches associated with W10.

I have been using MS since the days of DOS when you had to boot the PC from a floppy disk. 

So, it's time for a change.  I will be purchasing an iMac this year.

I am using Windows 10 pro version 1703 and the registry was missing the default power schemes. Here is the copy from my machine that fixed the problem. Copy this information to a text file, name and save the file then rename the extension to 'reg'

Then you can double click the file to merge it into your registry. Follow safe computing practices before doing this by creating a registry backup (export the registry) and create a system restore point. You can also create a system image for added protection.

I tried this but get an error (see below)... Any ideas? I'm the only account / user on this computer so not sure why I wouldn't have the privilege?
