This a really unhelpful response from Microsoft - where is the "NO" button for "was this helpful?"

I have the same problem on boo tup of Windows 7. The answer obviously is not on the Microsoft website. Perhaps it's too difficult a question for the experts at Microsoft and Apple is way to go in the future.

For now I'll have to use google to find the correct answer...

I received the same message about the sortkey.nlp .  Here are the circumstances:

1) Using Windows 7

2) Tried to eliminate the nuisance automatic start-up of Windows Live Messenger by unchecking it from  the Startup Items in System Configuration (Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> System Configuration --> Startup tab)

3) Rebooted the PC

4) PC would not reboot with a Restart

5) Rebooted several times with only black screen; finally, another reboot gave me the opportunity to boot with Startup Repair.  When prompted, I agreed to let the repair process go back to previous system config.

6) After a considerable amount of time, Startup Repair claimed to not be able to fix the problem, and it turned off the PC

7) Rebooted again, and to my surprise, system actually booted normally, except the message about softkey.nlp .

8) Rebooted several times and got same message.

9) Utilizing another forum's advise, I ran sfc /scannow from the Command Prompt (as administrator), and no problems were detected.

So, how do I get rid of this softkey.nlp problem/message, AND how can I get rid of the automatic startup of Windows Live Messenger without crashing my system?

Thanks to anyone who can help!!

I too receive  a pop up message when starting up my computer with windows 7 that says 'sortkey.nlp' can't be found. I am able to continue booting up though with occasional problems getting to internet pages when first accessing internet)

I did not see anything helpful on what this sortkey message means or how to get rid of it.

Is there any further input from Microsoft or the Microsoft community that can answer this question-what does it mean and how to get rid of it?
