Why can't I connect a Nikon D5300 camera to my PC using USB

I've just upgraded my camera and have tried to connect it to my Windows 10 PC using the supplied USB cable.  When I turn the Camera on, Windows sends a message to say that the last item connected by USB is not recognised???HelP....please.  I have Nikon software on my PC, but it doesn't seem to be a Software issue, it appears to be a Windows issue.

Hi Dale. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Can you try another USB port? Does it even register in Settings>Devices?

Are your PC's chipset, USB3, display and all other drivers current from the Support Downloads web page? Check now.

Troubleshooting for that model here: http://forum.mainsequencesoftware.com/t/connect...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

There is a firmware update that was released in August, you might want to apply that.

Hi Greg, thanks for the prompt reply.

MY PC is all up to date - I checked any necessary updates etc earlier today.  I've tried the other USB ports and no joy.  I've looked at the link you provided and nothing seems to give a definitive answer.

I'll keep trying to solve it!

Thanks again

I am going to recommend you downgrade to Windows 10 1703.

Step 1: download Windows 10 1703 from the following link:

Step 2: create a bootable copy

I had the same problem. My PC (Windows 7) didn't connect with Nikon D5300 camera. I wanted to control the camera by special software. Problem was solved by installing MTP Porting Kit from Microsoft official website:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19153
