KB4515384 Windows 10 causes Critical error with Start Menu

Hi all,

Today I installed KB4515384 which installs several security fixes plus an update for SearchUI.exe it seems.

After reboot, the start menu fails with a critical error.

I've uninstalled the update and the start menu seems to be ok now.

Other computers at my office seem to be ok, just my pc has the issue.

Anyone know where I can start looking for answers?

Thanks

G

Hi Geezer63rd

That is not a reported bug in that update, try installing the update again, to see if the exact same thing happens again, if it does, hide that update, so it does not install onto your PC, this should be resolved when the next cumulative update for version 1903 is released . ..

Download the tool from the link below, run that, in the list of pending updates, select that update and click 'Hide' that will stop windows from attempting to install it:

same issue on my PC. I tried install KB4515384 on one of my workstation with no luck. Menu start stopped working with critical error and sign out demand. After uninstall latest CU problem with start menu was solved but action center won't open now. Reinstalling update do nothing. Windows 10 especially 1903 is the most bugged OS ever. I suggest stay at 18362.295 as long as possible or until all flaws will be finally fixed

same issue here

I tried basically all sorts of ideas I found on that issue

sfc /scannow

re-register apps scan

create 2 new admin users

troubleshoot apps tool

start in safe mode

None of them are working.

Only solution so far is to uninstall the patch and hide the update

same problem here. I tried running sfc /scan now with the update installed and errors are shown. no errors are found with the update removed.  running health check on the image dsim /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth did not fix the problem when the update was installed sfc /scan now still showed integrity violations.

It breaks more than action center... left click on calendar, left click on the volume icon, left click on the internet access icon... all of them fail to respond.  Seriously, what a sincerely poor job on these updates.  Had to uninstall the 8 2019 release a couple of weeks ago due to high CPU.  Had to restore my computers with a system image for this patch Tuesday fiasco.  Ahhh yes, but please continue to force updates on me for my own good MS.  Just Brilliant!!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply.  I see this morning that this failed KB is all over the Windows forums.  Another failed update from MS it seems.

I will mark it as a dodgy update in my WSUS and wait for the next 'fix'.

Cheers

G

Does not work for me. the 4515384 update is not presented for hiding.

I was able to hide it using that app but I had uninstall the update first, reboot and then run the app and hide the update.  Also, you might want to pause the updates until you reboot again because for me it still installed after I hid the update.  I think because Windows had already started downloading it so I had to uninstall it once again.  But after that, it is hidden and Windows hasn't tried to download it again.

Hope this helps

I did the update on my computer on the 11th and it still isn't working. I finally got past the black screen but now get the home screen with no icons, and the mouse swirling when I move it to the task bar. I can't get anything to open at all including task bar, start menu, can't type in the search bar, nothing. This is very aggravating with a pc that can't be used.
