Hi I am having trouble installing KB2656356 on windows 7 x64 ultimate edition with SP1 (64bit)
I have tryed the, (manual downloads)
Windows6.1-KB947821-v20-x64_(System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2012])
Windows6.1-KB2656356-x64
dotnetfx35setup
MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run
sfc /scannow (command from cmd prompt) this gave me an error "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
"Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"
but I am unable to open the log file at Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log as it says I don't have permission to open this file
net stop cryptsvc (command from cmd prompt) and renaming catroot
before doing these I tryed to uninstall the net 3.5.1 from windows components restarting and reinstalling (that worked and it let me install one update to dot.net before I got the failed error message again on this update)
here is a copy of my windows update history log (could not figure out how to copy it from the displayed page)
windows first update is on 8/4/2010, first failed update is on 8/6/2010 for KB979916 (this update did install on 9/22/2010)
kb2656356 first failed on 2/5/2012 again on 4/5/2012 and again on 4/6/2012, 4/12/2012, 4/12/2012, 4/13/2012, 4/18/2012
I am trying to resolve the system file checker errors first and will be posting when that is fixed
(ran a disk check that fixed errors and then did a sfc in safe mode and got a 100% no error message) but still cant install the update (but the maunal update said it installed but the windows update said failed 2 min later grrr)
FIXED
going into <Control Panel> and <Programs> then <Turn Windows Features On or Off> and unselecting the check box for <net 3.5.1>, restart as asked and go back and recheck the box to reinstall it and restart (I know it wont ask you to but do it anyways),
install .net update (with a CRTL+ALT+DEL and a end process on both core/optimizers for .net) then immediate restart
do this again and this time it installed the KB2656356 (there was one update for .net before the KB2656356) restarted and now no more windows updates.
now to fix my Age of Empires Online error
Thanks, Wes
PS if I did not CTRL+ALT+DEL the net framework optimizers would run for 2~15 min and that is my guess why I could not install the update as the files were in use by the optimizer
