Event ID 8 and 11: Crypt32 Error

Event ID 11:

 Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab> with error: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.

EVent ID 8:

Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt> with error: 407 (HTTP Response Status)

 

Details:

Error found in Application Logs under Event Viewer. I have tried accessing http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab and I was able to download the CAB file. Extracted the file and install CTL (authroot.stl) but error still occured. I am using Windows XP SP3. Any idea?

  • When exactly are you getting this error message?

 

This behavior can occur if the Update Root Certificates component is turned on and the computer cannot connect to the Windows Update server on the Internet. You may try the steps below and check if it helps you fix the issue.You must connect to the Internet or turn off the Update Root Certificates component.

 

To turn off the Update Root Certificates component, follow these steps:

 

a. In Control Panel, double-clickAdd/Remove Programs.

b. ClickAdd/Remove Windows Components.

c.  Click to clear theUpdate Root Certificates check box, and then continue with the Windows Components Wizard.

Was there any change on your system before these events? The HTTP 407 code indicates that a proxy authentication is required in order to access the page. 

Have you seen the comments for these events here? Some comments indicate what to do if you do use a proxy.

This behavior is expected under the following conditions:

  • The computer is unable to access the Windows Update web site due to router or proxy configuration.
  • An application has been installed that has been designed to interact with the Windows Security Center (WSC) on Windows Vista or higher. Example applications include third-party virus software, malware scanners or firewall products.
