Cannot use my Microsoft Account on Windows 8 PC, Error Code: 0x80070426

I initial setup my Windows 8 PC with a local user with administrative rights. Now I want to switch this to a Microsoft account. I have my office email address registered as a Microsoft Account. But when I go to

Charms > Settings > Change PC Settings > Users > Switch to Microsoft Account

and try to use this email, it immediately says

We're sorry, but something went wrong. Your account wasn't changes to this Microsoft account. Code: 0x80070426

What am I doing wrong? This is very frustrating :(

Hi,

I would suggest you to check the status if Windows is activated.

a)      Press Windows key + W.

b)      Type Activation and press Enter.

Method 1: Refer to the link I would suggest you to run the Microsoft Accounts troubleshooter and check,

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/create-user-account

Then try to switch from Local Account to the Microsoft Account.

Method 2: Disable third-party Security Software,

a)      On your Computer screen Task Bar next to System Clock.

b)      You will see the third-party Security Software Icon.

c)       Click on the third-party Security Software Icon, you will see a pop up.

d)      In that pop and select the option to disable, click on it.

Now the third-party Security Software will be disabled.

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3: Boot the computer in Clean Boot and try to switch to Microsoft Account and check,

Perform Clean Boot.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 8 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Important: Reset the computer to start to normal startup.

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

a)      Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b)      In the ‘Run’ window type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c)       On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.

d)      When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.

If you have any queries related to Windows feel free to post. We will be happy to help you.

Thanks Santhosh,

My windows reports that it is activated, I just rechecked. I tried the clean boot as well and it still does not help. It will not even let me add a new user with Microsoft account.

I guest I will just reset the PC and try again.

Thanks for your help though.

Hey there :) just wondering if your reset worked? did you use the refresh pc? I am having the same problem as well and im getting quite sick of not being able to find a better solution than refreshing the pc. I have also contacted Microsoft and they cant help as my Windows 8 was not purchased retail so im not covered under warranty even though its only couple of months old. They did offer though at a price of $149 which i dont have handy :( I have also tried the msconfig to no avail. I am so over it and wished i never bought the Windows 8. Be nice to know if yours is working now as i did come across another post and the guy said it didnt work for him and that he took the computer back to the shop. sigh!! Let us know :)

Kind Regards,

liz

No, even after a full reset it did not work. I even tried formatting my hard drive and did a fresh install of Windows 8 from scratch but to no avails. Looks like the problem is with back end Microsoft account services.

The support team did not help as well. It is very very frustrating. I have not created a new ID and using that because without a Microsoft account you cannot use the Market place at all :(

Hey thanks for your reply :)  I ended up re formatting my hard drive and it worked but I used a brand new email account (Hotmail) but  when I went to the store the (install) button was not present. so I reformatted again with this new email and low and behold the trust pc issue would not work AGAIN!! with the new email. Tell you what its definitely Microsoft end. Sooooooo I decided to make a new email again sigh but this time I went with live.com.au and you wouldn't believe it but I didn't even have to trust my pc at all and everything is working. It was just crazyyyy i tell you having to trust pc and it takes you to outlook then it sends you the code etc to alternative email or your phone which i did instead of email which is such a pain but I did notice on the new email (Hotmail one I did) that I had two emails this time. one was code and the other was asking about trusting my pc with a blue box inside the email that you could click to trust and it took me back to my desktop to show that it had worked.  I didn't have this email before when i was having previous issue the only thing I was sent by email was the code.

Talk about 3rd time lucky. Was really doing my head in!!  I did read up on the 30day waiting period on changed passwords etc and I thought this is just not right!! to wait 30 days before they will trust your pc!! Especially is you want to use all the Windows 8 features!!. so the answer is probably in the email set up. My opinion to anyone is set up a new email and maybe go with the live.com or .com.au. Just glad mine is working now :) I just forward my emails now.

I have been playing around in windows services and found that the cause was a disabled service called
Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant, once I changed to automatic delayed and started it, the account changed successfully. hope this helps.
