SCANPST cannot be started - error 0xc0000005

I had to close down my computer last night after a monitor crash. This AM Dell and Windows fixed various errors, but my email PST file is corrupted. I cannot run SCANPST.EXE because of the above error and I do not have a clean copy of SCANPST.EXE, can you give me a way forward?
You could copy your .pst file to a different machine and scan it there.

Hello, I recommend repairing Office, then running scanpst again: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/repair...

Hello Frederik - After I wrote my first message I remembered my small laptop and prepared to copy the clean SCANPST on to my main PC. Your reply came up so copied the corrupt PST on to the laptop and ran SCANPST. SCANPST went through all 8 phases but then returned a message saying SCANPST failed to complete the task. According to the LOG of the rebuild process the job was completed up to the point of checking the folder structure, at that point SCANPST crashed without further explanation. I don't know how SCANPST works but I suspect that the programme may have to be on the machine where the original file was corrupted.

Thanks for the offer of help.

Best wishes

No, scanpst.exe is a stand-alone tool that can run anywhere. What you report suggests that your .pst file is damaged in a way that scanpst cannot repair. I do not know how to fix the problem other than by restoring an intact copy of your .pst file from your backup medium.

Thanks Frederik - I have removed and re-installed Office (see David P - response) and can now run SCANPST on the desktop but it fails to unscramble my PST file. I have read somewhere in passing that you may have to run the SCANPST file more than once, I have tried this 6 times but the log file contains the same information after each iteration so I am assuming that this is pointless, as you say it looks as though the damage is pretty severe. Thanks again for your help.

Hello David - I followed your suggestion of repairing Office, although I simply uninstalled and then installed an updated version. SCANPST now works on the PC so that is progress, however, it cannot unscramble my PST file, and unfortunately my last backup is two months old (I had been on holiday and was only using the PC intermittently and forgot - I blame senility virus!). As an interim measure I have set up a new local user account with an alias to my email so I can access new emails but I have a significant gap in emails that contains important information I need for various purposes. If you have any advice on software that may help with unscrambling a PST file I would be happy to hear it.

Hello, i'm glad uninstalling and installing a new version restored a working scanpst executable. Since it was unable to fix your corrupted PST file, I recommend restoring your file from backup. You may also be able to restore email from the .BAK file, for which directions are here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/repair... There are many third party PST repair programs, none of which I have used, that may also fix the corrupt PST file.
