Surface Pro 4 will be charged and suddenly turn off. Wont turn on again until plugged back in and then thinks it has 0% battery.

I have a surface Pro 4 from late 2015-early 2016. I have an issue where about once every day or two I will be at (for example) 80% battery and my surface will just turn off. I try and turn it on again and nothing happens - I sometimes get a low battery indicator. When I plug in my computer it will turn on again but it thinks it has 0% battery, but will say time 20 minutes to full charge (charging from 80%).

There is no pattern to it that I can see, I will generally be in class when this happens but it happens during any time of day. Is this a battery hardware problem that can be inexpensively fixed? I know that the surface is rather difficult to repair.

Thanks for any help.

there is speculation that the "battery performance improving" firmware released
in August is the cause of this.
"Surface Embedded Controller Firmware – Firmware

103.2614.257.0 improves battery performance."

Microsoft has not acknowledged battery issues resulting from these August
firmware updates, but SP4/5/6 and Surface Laptop 2 etc. are all impacted.
hopefully this can be fixed with a software update. HOWEVER, there are other
battery issues impacting SP4, so there is no guarantee.. batteries can't be
replaced.

The problem has been ongoing for about a year now. So im guessing its a hardware issue unfortunately.

There have been battery drain complaints for some time. All MS will do is offer to exchange and they are currently charging $599 US for out of warranty replacements. if it were me, I'd use that money to purchase something else.

Sorry not meaning to hijack this thread but this is interesting to me. I just posted about my problem with the surface plugged in and not charging. The issue appeared around the time this seems to have rolled out. Can you reverse the firmware?
