Error, "The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now." after installing Windows Update.

I had been using Windows 8.1 on my standalone desktop since the update came out.  The latest automatic update causes this error on boot up:  "The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now."  I can't get past this.  My computer is unusable at this moment.  There are no connections to the computer and I have the Ethernet cable unplugged.

I put in my Win 8 disk to try a recovery.  Refresh doesn't work.  Restore doesn't work.  I am stuck.  Any suggestions?

Answer

I just had this happen to me and solved it like this:

  1. Unplug your network cable, or turn off your wifi.
  2. Reboot your computer
  3. Login to your computer. It let me do it without the network plugged in.
  4. Once you are logged in, plug in your network cable or turn your wifi back on.

Worked for me. Hopefully, it works for you!
