Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04, when i choose windows in the grub menu all i get is a black screen

Try doing a repair installation, then use EasyBCD to add an try for either Windows or Ubuntu:

1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD
2. Restart your computer
3. When asked if you want to boot from your DVD drive, do so.
4. Choose your language, click Next.
5. Click 'Repair your computer'
6. Select operating system you want to repair.

Thanks for your quick reply, the thing is i don't have a dvd/cd drive, and the windows 7 was pre-installed when i bought this pc. so i don't have a windows 7 dvd eather.

You may need another computer with Windows 7...

If your partitions aren't too badly damaged the info below may work.

Use your Windows 7 install disk or recovery disk to repair the boot process. If successful you will be able to boot into Windows, but not into Ubuntu. Then use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu to the Windows bootloader.

An alternate method would be to reinstall GRUB - doing so should add Windows 7 to the GRUB boot menu and allow you to boot into Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

Step 1. Try Repairing The Windows 7 Installation

1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart your computer
2. Boot from the DVD.
3. Choose your language and click Next.
4. Click Repair Your Computer and then select the operating system you want to repair.
5. Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.

1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart your computer
2. Boot from the DVD. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
3. Choose your language and click Next.
4. Click Repair Your Computer and then select the operating system you want to repair.
5. Select Command Prompt and type the following commands (pressing Enter after each one): 
 
bootrec /fixMBR
bootrec /fixBoot
bootrec /rebuildBCD

Note: there is a space before the /

You can use EasyBCD by NeoSmart Technologies to edit the Windows 7 boot menu. It allows you to define start-up settings and edit boot entries.

-for appply the method in the first link you mentioned, i need a pc with windows 7 installed and has a recovery partition. today i couldn't find one but i will keep that in miind.

-about the second link, first part tells that we need a cd/dvd drive which i don't have, i passed it. the second part looks like fine. i will give a shot for that tomorrow and write the reult here.

i achieved to see a windows screen!

after i run chkdsk D: /f /r it checked the disk in 5 steps but as i understood it didn't fix the errors.

anyway, after i rebooted the system and chose windows 7 from grub i see a blank screen but with some information (at last). It was a classic (i came to this comment after a quick search in google) problem :

"Window failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert....

2. ....

...

status : 0xc000000f

info : The boot selection failed because a required device is anaccesible

....

"

-the last software i installed on windows was clementine (a data mining program) but i'm sure that after that installation i booted windows succesfully many times so i think this is not the issue.

-the last action that may be effect hardware was to copy a 60 gb data from windows to linux while i was on linux (ubuntu). After this operation i couldn't boot windows anymore.

now, i found some instructions for this problem on google, if you already experienced on this issue and achieved it, than i would like to hear your solution.

i don't have a restore point, so i can not restore the system.

and if doesn't work either than i will loose my grub and ubuntu, right?

so isn't it a little bit dangerous? As i understood that this commands modify Boot and MBR sections,

so i think these steps are not safe.

what do you think?
