Follow the suggestions listed below for a possible fix:
Method 1: You may test the issue in a clean boot state and check if that helps resolve the Windows Update installation issue.
You may configure the computer in clean boot and check if the issue persists. It will start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps to eliminate software conflicts.

If the issue does not persist you may continue with step 2 from the above link.
Make sure you reset the computer to normal mode after the troubleshooting completes. Refer the section “Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state”
