where to spend element zero?

I'm doing my first play through as a soldier and element zero seems pretty scarce.  So far, the only thing I've bought with it is my first power (barrier).  I have enough to buy my second power, but I'm wondering if I should do that first or buy one of the upgrades...

It's used for Biotic upgrades. Once you're beaten the game once, you are given 50,000 of each mineral and 200,000 credits, so Element Zero is not a problem anymore, as you only need around 32,000 of it to buy everything.
