User Profile Service service failed the sign-in

Few days ago i switched on my laptop and it took me to diagnosis and repair. After this, i tried to login (i use local account only) but pc was giving me error "User Profile Service service failed the sign-in". I havent been able to login since. I have tried a few things including:

- Restarting computer on normal mode.

- Restarting computer on all safe modes available (the safe modes still require me to login, aand keeps saying user profile service failed the sign in.

- I tried reseting (keeping personal files) three times but it refuses to do so. Says it has encountered a problem hence wont reset.

- Sadly i dont have any good restore point hence system restore is a invalid option for me.

- I tried creating windows 10 boot usb for repair but not sure if theres something i am doing wrong becoz it doesnt give me the option of using the usb.

If anyone can point me to a better solution i will be grateful.

PS: i had the latest Windows 10 (home) that i upgraded from online like a few weeks ago.

Hey Wonder. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Sounds like it's signed you into a Temporary Account. Sometimes when a Windows or Version Update fails due to a corrupted account it will create a temp one to sign into.

You should be able to leave the password box blank to sign in to the temp account.

Check at C:\Users if you can see your old account with its files intact. If not check at C:\Windows.old to see if files were archived there during a version install that fails.

If so copy the files out externally so they are safe. Files should always be backed up if you value them at all. You can copy or drag them to an external USB flash or hard drive, or into Onedrive (up to 5gb free) or Google Drive (up to 15gb free).

Try restarting the PC a few times to see if it will start into your account. If so go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If not then from the temp account can try to repair the old account using one of these methods:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/48012-fix-y...
http://www.sysprobs.com/fix-temporary-profile-w...

If not then you can try to create a new Admininstrator Local Account to see how it works: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for....

If necessary to try to repair the old account or create a new Account you may need to enable and Sign into the Hidden Administrator account used only for emergencies, using one of these methods: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2969-enable....

Once the new account is created: sign into the new account, move your files over, test that all programs run. If you decide to keep it then you can delete the old accounts when ready. in Settings > Accounts > Family and other Users.

If the install is too corrupted for even a new account to run well, then see if you can go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If not you can run a Repair Install which reinstalls WIndows while keeping your files, programs and most settings in place, by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This will solve most problems and also bring it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

If those fail then you can do a Reset: http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/reset-windows...

Or you can do the vastly superior Clean Install which should get you past all difficulties as it has hundreds of thousands of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Make sure during the booted install to follow the illustrated steps to delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, then click Next to let it auto-create the needed partitions, format them and begin install - this makes it foolproof.

You will get and keep the best possible install to the exact extent you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the linked tutorial. It's a better install than any amount of money could buy.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thanks for the reply Greg,

I read most of your suggestions before i even typed my problem. The thing is, its not a temporary account that the pc is on. It loads with the one and only profile account, which is my account, an admin account with password protection. And no other. And it does this in whatever mode.

Perhaps the only way forward is to go through cmd and trying to use the usb that i created Windows 10 from. If i can get guidance on how to do this.

When exactly was the latest version Update installed? In the panoply of failures that Windows 10 suffers, normally the catastrophic failure that accompanies that error is a direct result of the Version Update. In that case these are the steps that work for it:

1) Try whichever method works here to get into Advanced Startup Options to Go Back to Old Version: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

If you are able to access Go Back and it fails, skip to step 3.

2) If necessary create bootable installation media to access the repair options if not accessible by any other method:

To create Windows 10 Installation Media on another PC install Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.... Uncheck the box for Recommended Settings to choose the exact version and bit rate for the target PC only.

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutor...

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, on second screen choose Repair Your Computer link, then Advanced Troubleshoot options - to Go Back.

3) If this fails try a Startup Repair, or go back to Troubleshoot Options on the previous screen to Reset your PC which will save your files while reinstalling Windows.

4) If that fails you can use the booted media to do the Clean Install which should get you past all difficulties as it has hundreds of thousands of others who have followed the steps in this link and never come back to report another problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I would try the latest version because 90% of the time the Clean Install will run it fine, but if not there are previous versions media to install here: https://tb.rg-adguard.net/public.php. Burn to DVD with Windows Image Burner or create bootable 8+gb flash stick installer using Rufus set to UEFI for GPT for a UEFI BIOS, or Legacy for MBR for a Legacy BIOS.

There is a step to rescue files from the booted media to a USB flash or external drive: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki....

It's a better install than any amount of money could buy and a great learning experience that will make you the master of your PC.

5) If the Upgrade rolls back to the old version then you can block it this way: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...

When ready follow these steps to manually upgrade: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I'll keep working with you until it's resolved.
